This may be of interest to the new blood joining the arteries of the Graphics world.

I was reflecting last friday and noted all the tools I’ve come across on my creative journey from physical to more so digital now.

Some have struck out and some I still swear by like my trusted Bic® Biro and A4 refill pad — it’s where it all starts for me. I remember being shouted at by a CD at one of my first studios ordering me to stop using the A4 refill pad and pen sketches as they couldn’t show this to clients. I’ve rebelled since and it’s one of the first things I show in my presentations — it’s more human.

With the advent of AI and the worry that follows of the changing creative realm It shows to those outside the industry the amount of learning and knowledge that accumulates to realise projects and how some skills become redundant and the designer has to pivot. How typesetting was lost to Desk Top Publishing, how photography was changed by Photoshop...

All this on top of keeping your creative brain in tune to relay thoughts, start or notice trends, engage, educate, copywrite, strategise, map, rationalise, interpret data, psychologically profile and realise your visions.

The change of the scope of what is a Graphic Designer is massive. Do you specialise as a fontographer, typographer, illustrator, animator, content designer, web designer (multiple strands within this), videographer, game designer, experiential designer, interpretive designer, infographics, brand strategist or do all of the above.

To the new creatives — enjoy the trip and keep playing with Lego® :)
..

Be cool to hear other people’s journeys and tools they’ve pivoted to or ditched along the way. I sure I’ve missed some as it’s a quick snapshot of what sprung to mind.

Celebrating that Spring has now Sprung! 🌞🌱

This has been in the Planchest stuck drawer for a few years now and deadline was set to get it done for the Equinox.

Over many years I've been playing with layered type forms and there relationships to create a greater overall emergence. My eyes were also opened to the possibilities of colours and their monthly transitions when I worked with the vibrant photography from Lizzie Coombes (Betty Lawless) to create a fun, colour clash, kitcsh punk calendar.

I've wanted do this type based calendar for ages showing the tonal transitions of the seasons and how each months hue evolves to its next natural state in relation to what came before and what's next.

Last Top Drawer project in the Planchest Studio for 2024 for

Over the past year I've been in collaboration with the managing director, Paul Dyson looking at the visual and strategic positioning of the new Leeds based building sector recruitment agency resulting with the launch of the new website yesterday.

Construction inspired colours and playful iconography have been employed to strengthen the connection with tradespeople resulting in high viz impact to stand out.

The supporting message of Building Opportunities™ was used as the core foundation of the site with all jobs springing from this with a simple navigation that takes you directly to the sector specific roles. The interface is designed to avoid hamburger menu interventions using a clean layout and prominent buttons to take candidates to the CRM or download the groundbreaking timesheet app (less paper and paid faster).

The arrow device within the logo gives direction and is a flexible element which can be used throughout all comms strengthening recognition.

Gifts that make a difference... For the past couple of years I've been helping with design on York based projects that also create beneficial social impact. Here's a selection of books that are all available to buy online from the shop at www.coterminous.co.uk

01/ Hidden Tracks — A self guided tour of York uncovering lesser-known heritage locations within the city. Created by individuals affected by homelessness as part of a Good Organisation (Social Ventures) project, it combines creative writing, archival research, photography and design.
56 Pages. Printed by .uk
£15

02/ Homeless Bound — A dip in and out Hardback book created by people with lived experience of homelessness, which uses graphic design, photography and creative writing to explore a broad range of themes, including how language and stereotypes ultimately lead to the infantilisation and disempowerment of those affected by the issue. The book also contains NFC tags linked to supplementary online content, which can be accessed via the readers mobile phone.
120 Pages. Printed by
£25

03/ Guy Fawkes & Me — Vicki MacPhail is a tour guide with Invisible York, a social enterprise initiative which supports those affected by homelessness to operate their own walking tours in the city. Beyond a tale of gunpowder, treason and plot, her tour tells the comprehensive story of Guy Fawkes, from his family history in York, to growing up, and the influences surrounding him as a Protestant and later a recusant Catholic. She first became interested in Guy Fawkes in 2009, and her passion is one of the reasons that she moved to the city. In this book, she interweaves her own personal journey of being diagnosed with stage 4b cancer, treatment, and remission, along with her experience of homelessness with the story of his life.
72 Pages.
£5

Thanks for reading and to all those mentioned that helped create the content and make them come to life.

Eye Can See You Now…

Both of my eyes are now fully focussed and raring to go (although I’m currently borrowing my partners reading specs until I have my post op 4 week check up). Thank you to Specsavers NHS, Optegra for finding the issue and swiftly treating the fast-growing cataract that was found.

To celebrate my renewed vision I am offering 2x FREE 1 hour slots every Wednesday to have a chat. Bring along your latest project in progress that will help from a fresh creative perspective or insightful appraisal.

Over the past month or so I have trialled how the sessions can help people — It’s ranged from them seeing that just a few tweaks are needed, realising a full overhaul of their identity will help better relay their direction to just a reaffirming ‘Hey, you’re doing good and keep doing what you’re doing’ chat. I’m also open to discussing latest practices or discoveries I’ve made that have helped how I create — for example the ease and potential of the new gmail booking calendar I just found to schedule these 1hr slots.

We'll explore:
• Finding Your Visual Voice: Helping you discover and articulate your unique visual style.
• Colourful Expressions: Evaluating your current palette or proposing new colour choices to sure up your visual presence.
• Strengthening Identity: Offering advice on where you are, refinements, and can we evolve your logo to better represent your thinking.
• Nurturing Ideas: Generating new ideas or alternate directions for community engagements or creative projects.

These sessions are not just about appraising but also about collabs and community. It's a chance to share insights, get inspired, and find new ways to realise potential.

Idea for a tee. Can be interpreted on many levels. For me it's recognition to all those who have helped and walked me through my mental illness. Came about from a cartoon about rescue dogs that resonated with me and made me smile. Thank you to all who have supported and still do.
