Scientists have discovered several powerful fungi that can eat plastic! 🌱🧫 One marine fungus, Parengyodontium album, was found in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It naturally breaks down polyethylene—the most common ocean plastic—especially after sunlight weakens it. 🌊☀️

In another major breakthrough, a fungus from the Amazon rainforest, Pestalotiopsis microspora, can digest plastic without oxygen, making it ideal for landfills. Meanwhile, backyard molds like Aspergillus terreus and Engyodontium album were shown by Australian scientists to degrade plastic bags by 27% in just 90 days.

This natural solution could transform how we handle plastic waste—nature fighting back against pollution! 🌍🍄

China has installed a massive 50-meter-high inflatable dome over a construction site in Jinan city to reduce dust and noise pollution, making it one of the most innovative environmental solutions in urban development. According to Gulf News, the dome covers an area of about 20,000 square meters and is made from durable, weather-resistant materials. It stays upright through a constant air pressure system, which means it doesn’t need internal supports and can fully enclose the construction site. This helps trap dust particles and significantly reduce the noise from heavy machinery, improving the quality of life for nearby residents.

The dome also includes transparent sections that allow natural light to enter, along with advanced ventilation systems to maintain safe air quality inside. According to The Bridge Chronicle, this project is part of Jinan’s broader efforts to meet strict environmental regulations and minimize the impact of construction on surrounding communities.

While the dome has been praised for its effectiveness and creativity, some experts have raised concerns about potential heat buildup and the safety of workers operating inside the enclosed space.

Scientists at the University of Tokyo developed a biodegradable plastic called "marine biodegradable plastic" using natural ingredients like starch and cellulose.

More recently, researchers at Kyoto Institute of Technology and Osaka University advanced the concept by engineering PHA-based bioplastics (polyhydroxyalkanoates) that degrade quickly in seawater and become useful organic matter in soil.

These innovative plastics are engineered to completely break down in marine environments within hours to a few days, depending on temperature and salinity.

In soil, they fully decompose into carbon dioxide and water in under 10 days, also helping enrich the soil by acting like compost.

This addresses a major global concern — traditional plastics take hundreds of years to decompose and harm marine life.

These new plastics are aimed at reducing the ecological impact of single-use products, particularly in oceanic and agricultural settings.

Japanese companies are now beginning small-scale production trials of such plastics, especially for marine packaging, fishing gear, and single-use cutlery.
