The costal cartilages are bars of hyaline cartilage that serve to prolong the ribs forward and contribute to the elasticity of the walls of the thorax. Costal cartilage is only found at the anterior ends of the ribs, providing medial extension.
Reconstruction of the ear is done by surgeons using the costal cartilage. The costal cartilage is carved out and using a stencil, the ear cartilage is restored using surgical procedures. Osteo3d has developed software, methods and tools that help surgeons plan these procedures with soft/flexible Costal Cartilage models.

Osteo3d has developed a cranial helmet for a 1 month old baby who underwent a procedure for Congenital Hydrocephalus. The helmet was designed custom for the patient so that pressure could be exerted at the right areas as per the post-operative requirements. Neurosurgeon Dr. Sharan Srinivasan conducted the surgical procedure successfully and requested Osteo3d to design and fabricate a custom helmet for the patient.

3d printing a heart model.
There has been a lot of Hype created by some companies on ‘soft tissue’ based 3d printing. They use soft / flexible material with colors and claim to be providers of soft tissue based medical models. In the true sense, a soft tissue model is something which should display anatomical attributes in a transverse section when you slice a model as one would see if a real organ would be sliced. This, as of now cannot be easily fabricated and involves very high costs. Osteo3d has so far not claimed to fabricate 3d printed soft tissue models in view our interpretation of what is a soft tissue model. A medical model that is fabricated using flexible material with colors is not a difficult thing to do as we have demonstrated with our own software algorithms and processes. We would call is ‘Medical Models based on Soft Material’ rather than ‘3d printing soft tissue’. In case you have any such requirements, please do not hesitate to contact us!
