Most product managers still underestimate one thing about messaging:

it is not a support feature.

It is part of the product.

Your user does not judge the experience only inside the app.
They judge it in the OTP that does not arrive.
In the payment reminder that comes too late.
In the promo sent through the wrong channel.
In the reactivation flow that feels generic and irrelevant.

And the numbers make this hard to ignore:

71% of consumers abandon purchases when experiences fall flat.
88% are more likely to buy when engagement is personalized in real time.
Yet only 44% of brands say they actually deliver that kind of real-time personalization.

At the same time, SMS still gets around 98% open rates, and 90% of messages are read within 3 minutes.
And WhatsApp is no longer just a “nice to have” channel, Meta said paid WhatsApp messaging already crossed a $2B annual run-rate.

So the real question for product teams is not:

Deliverability ≠ Sent: how businesses fool themselves

One of the most common mistakes in messaging is also the simplest: “We sent the messages, so users received them.” In reality, Sent is only a technical status. It means the message left the platform and was accepted by the next network. Nothing more.

Between Sent and actual delivery, a lot can happen:
- operator filtering and firewalls
- inactive or invalid numbers
- routing issues and delays
- grey routes generating misleading delivery receipts
- OTT platform restrictions or throttling

From a dashboard perspective everything looks successful. From a user perspective - nothing arrived. This is why campaigns showing 98-99% sent rate still fail to perform. Businesses measure activity instead of outcome.

Real deliverability is about:
- how fast messages arrive
- whether they reach real users
- and what happens after delivery

Strong messaging teams don’t ask “How many messages did we send?”. They ask “How many actually arrived and converted?”

Because messaging was never about sending.
It’s about being received.
