Finally, you arrive in Malta.
Hours of travel behind you.
Ready to be welcomed by an island with a story.
Instead, a white corridor.

Malta is a culture made of arrivals.

This is a concept I’ve been developing for Malta International Airport to turn that 60sec walk into a warm welcome.

Right now the arrivals corridor is the last thing anyone remembers about landing here.

My idea: fill it with a layered series of Contemporary mirrored artworks. Each one carries something that arrived on this island from somewhere else and stayed long enough to become Maltese.

Near the Entry gate, the shapes are old and sparse. By baggage reclaim, they’re dense and alive. Walking the corridor becomes walking through every layer this island has taken on.

Each Artwork gives you the chance to catch yourself standing inside the story instead of just walking past it.

Malta is an island built by people who arrived and stayed long enough to change it and make it theirs.

60 seconds isn’t long.
It’s enough.

What is a 5m bomb doing just outside Europe’s largest dome?

There is a story behind this...
In 1942, a real ww2 bomb fell on the Mosta Church.
Through the roof, during Mass, hundreds of people inside.
and It never went off.

They called it a miracle. Still do.
This is sculptural thinking
Commemorating the Mosta dome story.

I caught myself wondering as I pass by the same spot every day.

what if... a Landmark could complement another landmark’s message,
a work of art to enhance Mr. England’s Landmark.

Taking inspiration from the Family Landmark
designed just up the road..

I visualised a rough idea of what that could look like.
Here is my messy process of thinking.

A man got bitten by a snake and the Maltese decided he was a god.

Paul was washed up in Malta after a shipwreck, half drowned.
The Maltese helped him and lit him a fire.
A snake came out of the heat and bit his hand.

While everyone thought he would die from the bite,
He survived and was said to have removed all poisen from the islands snakes.

This man was St. Paul
and this happened around 2,000 years ago.

It was later found by CBN that his 4 anchors, mentioned in the Bible, where found in Muxnar Reef, St Thomas bay and Not St Pauls’ bay.

This is a rough concept to capture the lived story tied to the location.

This is just a concept,
how Palcemaking & Sculptural Thinking
can turn a location into a destination.

how a landmark becomes an attraction that locals and tourist talk about,
share and want to revisit.

This is Krystal lagoon, a small natural window formed and I wanted to add some surprise and wonder to the rubble petruding out of the sea.

Did you Know the Original Popeye Film was shot in Malta?
Malta kept the original set as is and turned it into a tourist expierence.

Popeye village Malta is a destination you can visit and get a first hand feel what it’s like to like in Popeye’s era.

pretty cool if you ask me...

You know me, I love Placemaking + Cartoons,

I had this idea, to create a highly sharable Tourist Magnet...
A Stand out Sculpture that fits the location and story...
A dramatic scene between Popeye and the mighty octopus,

this is the sketch and an idea of what it could look like...
