Design is not just about how beautiful it looks.
It’s about how they’re seen and felt from your audience's POV.

This is Psychology + Communication.

That’s why I never start with the design first.
I start with the audience.

If you don’t understand your audience, their fears, desires, habits, and expectations —
your design will always miss the mark.

Fine designs can attract attention.
But only intentional design earns trust.

And trust is what actually converts.

Your design should speak to your audience, not just sit there looking nice.

They said don't judge a book by its cover but I beg to differ...🥱

You see, I totally disagree with this saying when it comes to the startup/business world.

most startups think that people will come after their product, maybe because they believe they are building the future - I say, scratch that.

You see, your audience doesn’t see your effort — what they see is your presentation - how you present yourself.

You could be working round the clock, burning energy to build something amazing — but if your brand doesn’t look or feel amazing, most people won’t take you seriously.

It’s not fair, but it’s true.

People judge a brand’s value by how it shows up. Messy design, inconsistent visuals, unclear communication — they all whisper, “We’re not ready yet.”

But the clean, consistent design says, “You can trust us.” Even before a single product demo or sales pitch, your designs do the first round of convincing.

so yes, people will always judge you by your cover🙂

When startups undervalue design, they unintentionally lower their perceived worth.

Design is important , it communicates your value without saying much.

You don’t have to look like Apple or the top brand in your niche — but you do have to look intentional.

Most startups confuse branding with marketing, and it’s one of the fastest ways to waste money.

If I were working with a startup struggling to attract customers, I’d ask:

“Are people ignoring you because your marketing is bad or because your brand message isn’t clear?”

Most founders panic and double their ad spend - but what if the real issue isn’t visibility, it’s clarity?

Because when people don’t understand who you are or why you exist, your marketing will always flop.

✅ Branding shapes the perception of who you are.
✅ Marketing is how you communicate that unique perception.

Marketing pushes.
Branding pulls.
Without a clear message, your marketing has nothing meaningful to say.

Think about it like this 👇🏽

Branding is your reputation - it’s how people feel when they see your name.
Marketing is your megaphone 📣 - it amplifies that reputation.

If your reputation (brand) isn’t solid, the megaphone (marketing) just makes the noise louder - not better.

✅ Branding builds trust
✅ Marketing spreads awareness
✅ Strategy connects both

So before spending more on ads, make sure your message is clear enough to attract, not just reach, your audience.

Have you ever tried marketing your business and realized people didn’t get what you were selling?

I would love to hear what that experience taught you 👇🏽

If you or your startup disappeared tomorrow, would anyone miss you?

Every product can be replicated. Every feature can be improved. But your brand, the feeling you leave behind, the community you build, the story you tell - that’s your superpower.

When you brand with purpose, you don’t just sell something; you create something people care about.

For instance:
Bumble didn’t just build a dating app. From day one, they built a brand around authenticity, kindness, and safe connection - they sold a feeling.

In your case:

✅Define the emotion you want your brand to evoke. Then let that emotion guide how you speak, design and behave.

Because people don’t buy What you do, they buy Why you do it.
---------------------
What emotion will people feel when they think of your brand ?

Every brand tells a story.
Your job is to shape your story and make sure your story is heard clearly.

And for startups, storytelling isn’t optional.
It’s how you connect amidst the noise.
It is how you get your audience to resonate on the same frequency with you.

Now, let’s take a look at , a Nigerian edtech (birthed 7yrs ago) that built its story around empowering African learners to compete globally.

Their mission? - To prepare people for opportunity.

And they are living it.

Their brand visuals from their colors to the confident student imagery are not just guess work, they were deliberately crafted to evoke an emotion: hope, empowerment, and belonging.

That emotional connection turns their customers into a community of die hard fans.

They have developed a culture for and around their brand.

✅Now, students don't just enrol in The uLesson Group, they believe in their culture too.

✅Their Teachers/Tutors don't just work with them and get paid, they live and breathe their brand culture.

That’s what Storytelling does. It goes deep and turns Trust & Loyalty into your currency.

------------------------
A little exercise for you:
✅ What is the “Why” behind your brand? Difference. Cause. Impact?
✅ What is your brand’s personality? Bold? Friendly? Authoritative?
✅ How do you want your audience to feel after interacting with you?

The best brands out there are intentional,
So should you too.

You'd be surprised how many startups launch with sleek logos and websites that look like they belong to a big tech company, yet struggle to attract or retain customers.

The issue isn’t the design itself. It’s that the design is trying to say something UNCLEAR.
(Stay with me)

If your audience doesn’t instantly get what you do or why it matters, your visuals (no matter how beautiful) becomes NOISE.

A brand without clarity is like a person speaking confidently in a language no one understands.
Looks impressive, but nobody resonates. (How do you get them to do business with you?)

When you understand who you are, who you serve, and what makes you valuable, your visuals become a reflection of your purpose and not a beautiful mistake.

Your brand color, typeface, and elements suddenly become functional. That’s where design becomes communication, not confusion.

Before you obsess over how your brand looks, make sure you know what it stands for. Visuals can only amplify what’s already clear.

So, If you had to explain your brand in one sentence, will your audience truly get it?

Paragon Veterinary Care is a home-based veterinary service dedicated to providing compassionate, expert care for pets in the comfort of their homes. The brand focuses on wellness, treatment, and preventive care, while also offering premium pet products to support healthy and happy pets.

They needed a visual identity that could capture its core values of compassion, trust, professionalism and reflect that they are a pet brand without looking cliche.

The logo follows an overall shape of the brand initial "P" infused with some unique elements to make the icon stand out. The logo works together with the colour palette to speak trust, compassion, and professionalism while reflecting the dual nature of the brand: veterinary expertise and supportive pet care at home.

[MY GRAPHIC DESIGN JOURNEY]

I started out as a professional Graphic Designer in 2020 Lockdown. Before then, I attended a computer training at an ICT center years back during my JSS3 long break, where I learned how to use CORELDRAW to create designs like church posters and invitation cards. I have always wanted to know how designs were created and often cringed at designs done by self-acclaimed gurus. That was how I developed an interest and curiosity to learn more.

I knew my design skills needed an upgrade which required practice, and I was shy to put my work out. I felt that design wasn't really for me and often cried and felt useless when faced with a screen without knowing what to come up with. I always asked myself, "Isn't this what other people are getting good at?"

Later on, I came across amazing creatives on Instagram doing incredible work and sharing tips. I got inspired and connected with some of them.

Due to my curiosity to learn more and get better, I quickly got exposed (I could even take away the "a" in "fast" – fst 😂😂, I guess you tried pronouncing it 😂).

I decided to try my hands out on logo design. TBH it wasn’t easy, it was very difficult to come up with an idea and concept. This was obviously because it was my first time and i had no process to designing a logo.

I embraced YouTube a lot (that's a goldmine, you know) and took some courses (both paid and free). I got better and better, and I could confidently take on most projects.

With time i transitioned into Brand Identity design, learning the Do’s and Don’ts, what makes a brand Identity and applying them.

My drive has always been to present brands better in an appealing way, where you would have to take a second look when you come across them, giving them the opportunity to show you what they’ve got to offer.

To be continued some other time...
Do you have a story about your journey you'd love to share?
