*Ammonia in Layer Poultry Pens Explained Simply*
Ammonia is one of the biggest hidden problems in poultry farming. Many farmers do not notice it early until birds start getting sick, stop laying well, or begin dying.

*What Is Ammonia* ?
Ammonia is a strong-smelling gas produced from bird droppings (feces/manure) and urine.

When poultry waste stays wet for too long, germs and bacteria break it down and release ammonia gas into the air.

That sharp, choking smell inside a poultry house is usually ammonia.

If entering your poultry pen makes your eyes burn or gives you difficulty breathing, the ammonia level is already too high for the birds too.

What Brings About Ammonia in a Layer Pen?
1. Wet Litter
This is the number one cause.

When wood shavings, sawdust, rice husk, or other litter materials become wet from:

leaking drinkers

spilled water

rain entering the pen

poor drainage

the droppings start decomposing quickly and release ammonia gas.

2. Too Much Bird Droppings
When manure is not removed regularly, it piles up and produces more ammonia.

The more droppings in the pen, the higher the ammonia.

3. Poor Ventilation
If fresh air cannot enter the poultry house properly, ammonia gets trapped inside.

Pens with:

Allow fresh air to move freely.

You can:

open windows

Many people think saving money means buying the cheapest poultry feeds, skipping vaccines, overcrowding your birds to maximize on space or delaying treating your birds hoping that they will miraculously recover because you are afraid of vet costs.In poultry farming, cheap decisions often become the most expensive mistakes.

IDENTIFYING NON-LAYING BIRDS IN A LAYER FLOCK

In poultry farming, one of the most critical management skills is identifying non-laying hens within a layer flock. Keeping unproductive birds is a direct economic loss, as they consume feed without contributing eggs. The infographic outlines eight key physical indicators farmers can use to spot these birds.

Comb and Wattles are among the first things to observe. A laying hen has a bright red, plump, and moist comb. A non-laying bird, by contrast, displays a pale, dry, and shrunken comb and wattles a clear hormonal signal that egg production has ceased or never properly began.

Pelvic Bone Spacing is a reliable hands-on test. In an actively laying hen, the pelvic bones are wide apart enough to fit two or three fingers to allow eggs to pass through. A non-layer shows narrow pelvic spacing, indicating the reproductive system is inactive.

Feather Condition tells another part of the story. Productive hens tend to have worn, dull feathers because energy is directed toward egg production rather than feather maintenance. Ironically, a non-laying bird often has smooth, bright, pristine feathers a sign she's been redirecting nutrients into her own appearance rather than producing eggs.

The Vent is another reliable indicator. An active layer has a large, moist, and oval-shaped vent. A non-layer's vent is dry, tight, and round, reflecting inactivity in the reproductive tract.

Beak and Skin Color matter especially in yellow-pigmented breeds. Laying hens lose their yellow pigmentation as it's transferred into egg yolks. A non-layer retains a bright yellow beak and shanks, signaling that pigment hasn't been utilized.
Abdomen and Fat Deposits reveal metabolic patterns. Non-layers tend to have a plump, hard abdomen loaded with excess fat, they're storing energy rather than converting it into eggs.

Eye-ring and Shanks similarly show retained yellow coloration in non-producers, while body condition and behavior round out the assessment. A non-laying hen is often dull and inactive, lacking the alert, busy energy typical of productive hens.

By combining these observations, farmers can make informed culling or management decisions, ultimately improving flock efficiency, feed conversion, and overall profitability. Regular flock assessment is not just good practice, it's essential economics.

There are reasons why you should not just buy any Broilers breed because people are buying it.

Farmers buy broilers based on different reasons. Some buy birds that grow faster (get to 2.5kg within 4-5 weeks),taller (sell them big during festivities), heat resistant (rear during hot/dry season), disease resistant, cold resistant etc.

The Ross 308, they don't grow very tall and are always short but very fat, they can withstand cold but they hate heat.Ross 308 grows faster than other broilers breed. They have a good conversion ratio and are more suitable to be raised for 4-6 weeks and then sell them off. they can weigh up to 2.5kg at 5 weeks of age. The hatcheries that produce them include,
SAYED AND AGRITED.

🐓. COBB 500.
Not as fast-growing as the Ross 308, but they grow taller than Ross 308. They can’t withstand cold and often sneeze and contact chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) easily even when they are still a day old chick. They are also strongly resistant to heat more than Ross 308. And more agile and resistant to diseases.
Hatcheries that produce COBB 500 include,
ZARTECH, OLAM, CASCADA, AND NPG.

🐔. ARBOR ACRE.
They are more similar to Ross 308 and can weigh up to 2.7kg At 6 weeks of age. They are also more resistant to diseases.
Hatcheries that produce ARBOR ACRE includes,
AMO, CHI, AND FIDAN.

🐓. MARSHALL
The only disadvantage is that Marshall doesn’t grow up fast like the other breeds do but they are the broilers that grow the tallest among the broilers breed. And they are more required during the celebration period because of their physical appearance.

Most farmers just open the box of day-old chicks they receive and move on.

But this little sticker actually tells you something VERY IMPORTANT about your chicks’ health, and you should pay attention to it.

It says:
Vaccinated BX D.O.C – ND (VH strain) + IB (H120 strain)

Let’s decode it together in simple terms:

BX means Broiler Cross: Chicks bred specially for meat production. They grow fast, eat efficiently, and reach market size in weeks.

D.O.C means Day-Old Chicks: Chicks that just hatched and are ready for your farm.

Vaccinated means they’ve already received protection from certain deadly diseases before leaving the hatchery.

ND (VH strain) stands for Newcastle Disease, a serious sickness that can kill birds very quickly. The “VH strain” is the vaccine type used.

IB (H120 strain) stands for Infectious Bronchitis, which affects a chicken’s breathing and egg production. “H120” is the vaccine type used to protect them.

So, this sticker means your Broiler Cross day-old chicks have already received their first two important vaccines.

This gives them a healthy head start in life.

Just like a baby getting their first hospital shots before going home.

TYPES OF POO, MEANING & TREATMENT.

1. Normal Brown + White Urat
- Meaning Healthy digestion

- Treatment: None. Keep feed, water, biosecurity clean.

2. White, Chalky, Watery Poo
- Meaning: Coccidiosis or kidney issue
- Treatment:
- Amprolium 20%:
1g per litre water for 5 days
- OR Toltrazuril 2.5% 1ml per litre for 2 days
- Add Vitamin K to stop bleeding. Isolate and change litter immediately.

3. Yellow / Mustard Watery Poo
- Meaning: Early Coccidiosis or Infectious Bronchitis
- Treatment: Sulphadimidine 33% or Sulphaquinoxaline at 1g per litre for 3-5 days + Vitamin K.

4. Green Poo
- Meaning: Starvation, stress, OR Newcastle/Fowl Cholera
- Treatment:
- If no other symptoms

Electrolyte + Glucose for 24hrs. Usually stress from feed change or heat.
- If combined with twisting neck, drop in egg, high death & Suspect Newcastle.

First isolate the sick birds
Treat with Sulfaquinoxaline, and Oxytetracycline for 5 days , then immediately vaccine the non affected ones with lasota vaccine

5. Blood-Stained / Red Poo
- Meaning: Severe Coccidiosis – cecal type
- Treatment: Amprolium + Vitamin K immediately. This kills birds in 48hrs if untreated.
- Prevention: Anticoccidial in feed from day 10.

6. Black, Tarry Poo
- Meaning: Internal bleeding from ulcer, mycotoxin, or overdose of antibiotics
- Treatment:
Vitamin K + Liver tonic like Livergen or Hepa-Care for 5 days. Also check feed for mold.

7. White, Slimy Poo
- Meaning: Pullorum disease – common in day-old chicks
- Treatment: Enrofloxacin 10% or Colistin for 5 days. Very contagious. Cull and disinfect pen.

8. Foamy, Undigested Feed Poo
- Meaning: Bad feed, poor digestion, or worms
- Treatment: Enzyme + Probiotic for 3 days. If it persists, deworm with Levamisole or Piperazine at night.

“Your Brooder is Killing Your Birds Slowly… and You May Not Even Know It”

“I am perplexed… I provided heat and feed, yet my chicks are still dying.”

I would like to pose a serious question to you today:

What if your brooder is the actual problem, rather than the chicks?

This is a common issue that results in significant financial losses for many farmers. The losses occur quietly, without warning, and are characterized by a gradual decline.

It is essential to recognize that brooding is not merely a matter of providing heat for the chicks. Rather, it is a life-support system for your investment.

If you fail to implement it correctly, your chicks will not complain; instead, they will die slowly.

Let me illustrate the common issues that arise on many farms:

Too Cold Brooder
Chicks begin to huddle together.
They pile on top of each other.
Some suffocate, while others become weak.
Death then occurs in a chain reaction.

Too Hot Brooder
Chicks disperse and move away from the heat source.
They pant and stop eating.
They drink excessive amounts of water, leading to weakness.

Wrong Positioning of Heat Source
Heat is intended to be evenly distributed.
However, when it is uneven, some chicks are comfortable while others suffer.

Here is the painful truth:

Chicks cannot survive in conditions that are merely “almost correct.”

They require consistency.

Let me provide you with simple brooding rules:

Pre-heat your brooder at least 24 hours before the arrival of the chicks.
Observe the behavior of the chicks, rather than making assumptions.
If they crowd together, it indicates that the brooder is too cold.
If they move away from the heat source, it indicates that the brooder is too hot.
If they disperse evenly, it indicates that you are implementing the brooding process correctly.

It is essential to monitor your birds closely, as they are always communicating with you; you simply need to understand their language.

Many farmers attribute the death of their chicks to disease, but the actual cause is often poor temperature management during the initial days.

If you lose your chicks during the first week, it can have a significant impact on the overall success of your farm.

In conclusion, I would like to emphasize the importance of proper brooding techniques.

Effective brooding provides a strong foundation, while inadequate brooding can result in silent losses.

Do not rush through this stage, and do not assume that the issues will resolve themselves.
