WAEC Moves 2026 WASSCE Fully Computer-Based, Schools to Serve as CBT Centres β No More Paper Exams
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced a major shift in the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), revealing that the 2026 edition will be fully computer-based, with no paper option available.
The resolution was reached at a meeting between WAEC officials and school representatives held on August 30, 2025.
According to WAEC, all candidates will be registered through their schools but assigned to designated examination centers. Schools interested in serving as WAEC CBT centers have been urged to notify the council immediately, with a special appeal for institutions in the Lekki, Ajah, and Epe axis of Lagos, which will be given priority.
Key highlights of the new arrangement include:
- Objective papers will be written entirely on computers, with three papers scheduled for one day.
- Essay and theory questions will be projected in examination halls, while candidates will only receive answer scripts β no hard copy question papers will be distributed.
- Practical examinations will be center-based, and supervising teachers must be IT-compliant.
- Schools providing CBT centers must have at least 50 functional computers and the capacity to host external candidates.
- Schools approved as centers will be paid by WAEC, regardless of whether their own candidates also write in the same venue.
- Practical materials will be supplied by schools whose students are assigned to each center.
WAEC further clarified that no school will be compelled to purchase computers before the exams, stressing that all registered candidates will sit for the 2026 WASSCE regardless of their schoolβs readiness.
Education stakeholders say the move is a bold step toward modernization, but it may also pose challenges for under-equipped schools, particularly in rural areas.
