*Summary of 2026 Jamb policy meeting*

The Federal Government has announced new reforms aimed at strengthening transparency, expanding access, and improving integrity in Nigeria’s tertiary admissions system. The reforms were unveiled during the 2026 Policy Meeting on Admissions organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, disclosed that candidates seeking admission into Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programmes with a minimum of four credit passes will no longer be required to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The exemption also applies to applicants into selected non-technology agricultural and agriculture-related National Diploma programmes. However, all candidates are still required to register with JAMB and process admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

The Minister reaffirmed that admissions conducted outside CAPS remain illegal and will not be recognised. He also restated that sixteen years remains the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions across the country.

Stakeholders at the meeting endorsed 150 as the minimum admissible score for universities and colleges of nursing, while 100 was approved for polytechnics for the 2026/2027 academic session. The reforms are also focused on digital transformation, inclusive education, and uninterrupted academic calendars.

It was revealed that over 2.2 million candidates registered for the 2026 UTME. Institutions were warned against illegal admissions and fake admission letters.

IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS: NO MORE JAMB UTME FOR COLLEGES OF EDUCATION AND AGRICULTURAL DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced a significant change in the admission process for certain programmes. Candidates seeking admission into Colleges of Education and Diploma programmes in Agriculture will no longer be required to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

I.e Candidates do not need to sit for the JAMB UTME if you are applying for: Any programme in a College of Education (NCE programmes), or Diploma programmes in Agriculture. Instead of writing the UTME, admission into these programmes will now be through direct registration and credential screening by the respective institutions.

Successful candidates will be offered admission based on the screening exercise and the availability of spaces in the chosen programme.

This policy is aimed at simplifying the admission process into these critical educational and agricultural training programmes.
