How many breeds of pig do we have?
There isn’t a fixed number like “10” or “50.” In reality, there are over 100 recognized pig breeds worldwide, and if you include local and indigenous types, the number is even higher.
Simple way to understand it:
All domestic pigs come from Sus scrofa domesticus, but humans have developed many breeds for different purposes (meat, mothering ability, hardiness, etc.).
Common well-known pig breeds
Here are some popular ones you’ll hear about in farming:
Large White pig
Landrace pig
Duroc pig
Hampshire pig
Pietrain pig
Types of breeds (by use)
Breeds are often grouped into:
Maternal breeds (good mothers): Landrace, Large White
Meat/terminal breeds (good growth & muscle): Duroc, Hampshire, Pietrain
Local/indigenous breeds (hardy, survive tough conditions): village pigs in Africa
Key point:
Species = 1 (domestic pig)
Breeds = 100+ worldwide
If you’re into pig farming, what matters most is not the total number, but choosing the right breed or crossbreed for your environment. I can help you pick the best breeds for your area in Nigeria if you want.
