If you are serious about building wealth…
Read this slowly.
Because this might be the most uncomfortable financial truth you will ever read.
And many people will not like it.
But it must be said.
Today, as a Financial Literacy Advocate on a mission to build 1 million financially free Nigerians…
Let me talk about something that has kept millions of young people broke for life.
Black Tax.
Yes.
Let me talk about it honestly.
No emotions.
No motivational quotes.
Just truth.
WHAT IS BLACK TAX?
Oya Relax…... let me explain:
Black tax is that invisible responsibility many young Africans carry.
You leave the village.
You come to the city.
You start hustling.
Then suddenly…
You are now:
The Family ATM
Emergency fund
Community bank
Village insurance
One day:
“Brother, I need to pay rent.”
“Aunty, my child is sick.”
“Uncle, school fees.”
“Grandma swallowed spoon, we need surgery.”
“Cousin wants to learn tailoring.”
And you…
You are still trying to survive.
Imagine:
Mama Ngozi just started selling tomatoes in a new market.
She has only one basket.
Before she even grows…
Every day somebody carries tomatoes from her basket.
One for uncle.
One for aunty.
One for neighbor.
One for village meeting.
Tell me…
Will that basket ever become a warehouse?
No.
That is BLACK TAX.
Many young Nigerians are not broke because they are lazy.
They are broke because they are over-responsible.
They are carrying destinies they have not built yet.
And this is the part nobody wants to say.
Two drowning people cannot save each other.
Read that again!
Two poor people cannot help each other.
You must learn to breathe first.
Let me be honest.
Here's the Average reality in Lagos:
Salary: ₦250K
Rent: ₦700K – ₦1M yearly
Transport: ₦2,000–₦3,000 daily
Food: ₦3K–₦5K daily
Data: ₦30K–₦50K monthly
Before month ends…
Life has already collected your salary.
Then…
Black tax enters.
You send:
₦10K today
₦20K tomorrow
₦5K next week
End of the year…
The only achievement is:
“I paid my rent.”
No investment.
No assets.
No growth.
Just survival.
This will offend some people.
But wisdom is not always sweet.
You cannot build wealth by dragging 10 people upward while you are still crawling.
It doesn’t work.
Not spiritually.
Not financially.
Not logically.
Even airplane safety rule says:
Wear your oxygen mask first…
Before helping others.
Why?
Because a dead helper saves nobody.
Iking....
DOES THIS MEAN ABANDON YOUR FAMILY?
No.
And this is where many people misunderstand.
You are not wicked.
You are strategic.
There is a difference.
You are not abandoning them.
You are positioning yourself.
Because…
A stable child can lift a whole family.
While..
A struggling child cannot even lift himself.
Let me be honest....
WEALTH REQUIRES SEASONS
Every serious wealth builder goes through a season of selfish discipline.
A season where you say:
“Give me 5–10 years to build.”
This is not pride.
This is planting season.
Nobody harvests during planting.
Let me tell you what most wealthy families understand that poor families don’t.
They delay generosity until after stability.
While...
Poor people give early and suffer later.
Wealthy people build first and give forever.
And Here's Why Many People Will Never Escape Poverty
Because they never create a boundary.
No financial boundary.
No emotional boundary.
No family boundary.
So their life becomes:
INCOME minus REQUESTS = ZERO
Repeat for 30 years.
Then they say:
“Village people are after me.”
No.
Sometimes…
It’s not village people.
It’s lack of structure.
If you are still young and building…
Read this carefully.
1: Communicate early
Tell your family:
“I am building for the next 5–10 years.”
Not arrogance.
But, Clarity.
2: Create a help budget
Not emotional giving.
Structured giving.
For Example:
“I can only help with 5% of my income.”
Once it finishes, it finishes.
Even banks have limits.
So...
Why not you?
3: Reduce lifestyle pressure
If rent is killing you, downgrade.
Wealth is built in quiet seasons.
Not Instagram seasons.
4: Build assets aggressively
Even if it is small.
₦10K monthly invested is better than ₦50K monthly sent away.
Because money that leaves without structure never returns.
Do you know that?
If you invest just ₦20K monthly
At modest 15% annual growth
In 10 years…
You are no longer talking about thousands.
You are now counting on millions of Naira.
Extend that discipline…
You enter generational territory.
Not by miracle.
But... By consistency.
The hardest part of wealth building is not earning money.
It is saying NO.
No to guilt.
No to pressure.
No to emotional blackmail.
Because many people will call you proud…
Until you succeed.
Then they will call you blessed.
If you don’t control Black Tax early…
It will control your destiny later.
You will wake up at 50…
Still restarting life.
Not because you didn’t work hard.
But because you never built a foundation.
Listen carefully.
You cannot pour from an empty cup.
You cannot plant from an empty barn.
You cannot save everyone while losing yourself.
Build first.
Then bless many.
That is how generational wealth is created.
If you are reading this and it touched you…
You are not wicked for wanting stability.
You are not selfish for wanting structure.
You are simply choosing wisdom.
And wisdom always looks strange at the beginning.
