She was twenty-two, but her eyes looked older than most elders. Five years had passed since her mother died, and in those five years Glory’s life had been a long list of “endure it” moments—moments that taught her to swallow pain silently and keep moving.
Her father, Mr. Thomas, had once been the kind of man who could make a farm feel like a kingdom and laughter feel like harvest. But grief changed him. Or maybe grief just uncovered what was always there, waiting. He became a drunkard, cruel and unpredictable, the kind of man whose footsteps alone could make the air in a room go cold.
And then he married Mrs. Grace.
The village women called her “wicked” in whispers, because saying it out loud was dangerous. Mrs. Grace hated Glory with the raw, personal hatred of someone who sees another woman as competition for attention, love, or simply oxygen. Under her rule, Glory cooked, fetched firewood, swept the compound, cleared weeds, planted cassava, carried water—working from dawn until the stars woke up again. Some nights she slept without food. Some nights she slept on an empty stomach and an even emptier heart.
People pitied her, yes. They sighed when she passed. They shook their heads. But nobody dared to speak. Nobody wanted to face Mr. Thomas’s “madness,” the way he could turn one sentence into violence. So Glory suffered in public silence, the kind of suffering everyone notices and everyone ignores.
Then Harrison arrived.
He came from the city, but he didn’t look like the city. His clothes were worn thin, his shoes had holes, and his hands were rough from labor. Yet his eyes were sharp—eyes that paid attention when others dismissed. He had been working on Mr. Thomas’s farm for three months, clearing bushes, carrying heavy loads, planting cassava under the burning sun.
And Mr. Thomas refused to pay him.
“Next week,” he always said. “Come tomorrow. I’ll pay you when I sell something.”
But “tomorrow” never came.
One hot afternoon, Harrison walked into the compound tired, sweaty, and angry enough to finally stop swallowing his own pain.
“Sir,” he said, voice firm, “I need my money today.”
Mr. Thomas scratched his head like the request was silly, like a man asking for the sky. His eyes drifted and landed on Glory, sweeping the compound with a face that looked like exhaustion itself.
And Mr. Thomas laughed.
A wicked, careless laugh.
“You want money?” he asked.
“Yes, sir,” Harrison replied. “I worked three months. Please pay me.”
Mr. Thomas pointed at Glory like she was a goat in the market.
“Take that girl instead.”
Harrison blinked, confused.
“Take who?”
“My daughter. She’s good for nothing,” Mr. Thomas said, as if Glory’s entire life could be reduced to one insult. “Let her follow you to the city. That will be your payment.”
Glory’s broom slipped from her hand.
Her heart didn’t just break—it cracked open like dry earth...
