What I really appreciate the most about Machiavelli's works is that, upon reflecting on his ideas, you are bound to vividly see them in real life events. Think about the above observation: we more often than not judge others based on their physical appearance, their clothes, and the people they have around them (a psychological phenomenon known as the halo effect). Thus, many "unconsciously" tailor their behavior to appear fitting -- for some, they are the funny one,for others, the silent one,and for most, the moral one, Machiavelli’s point is that a ruler must, on no occasion, leave his character to be decided by others. He must consciously play every part that the situation necessitates.
We are all Machiavellians; the difference is awareness, and Machiavelli is just encouraging rulers to choose how they are perceived rather than letting others define it for them.
