A new school year means new classes, new friendships…and often new group chats.

But have you heard of Com networks?

“Com” is short for “community”, but these are harmful online groups where manipulation, blackmail and causing harm may be used to gain status. The National Crime Agency has identified them as an emerging safeguarding concern.

This is especially important for parents and carers raising boys. Not because boys should be treated with suspicion, but because they can be targeted, recruited or drawn into harmful behaviour. Boys need safeguarding too.

The answer is not fear or constant surveillance. Stay interested in their online world, pay attention to significant changes and remind them that they can come to you without immediately being blamed or punished.

Online safety conversations do not always have to begin with a lecture. Sometimes, they happen naturally while young people build, play, solve problems and work together.

Through LEGO, board games and other screen-free activities, we create opportunities to practise problem-solving, teamwork, communication, creativity and STEM thinking. While the young people play, we also have conversations with them and their parents about online safety, healthy screen habits and finding a better balance between digital and offline life.

The aim is not to suggest that screens are bad. Technology can support learning, creativity and connection. Young people also need interesting alternatives that remind them how much they can create, discover and enjoy away from a screen.

We are pleased that these sessions will continue from September, with support from Cambridge City Council

If someone online told your young person, “Keep this between us”, would they feel safe enough to tell you?

Online grooming and scams do not always begin with obvious danger. They can start with friendship, compliments, gaming rewards, an unexpected link or a request to move into a private chat.

As schools resume, let’s add online safety to the back-to-school checklist. Review privacy settings together, talk through the warning signs and, most importantly, let them know:

“If anything goes wrong online, you can tell me. I will help you before I judge you.”

We’re adding something new to Elenasy! 💜

With support from The National Lottery Community Fund we’re delighted to be launching Connect Café – Play to Learn, a new addition to our existing community programmes in Darwin Green, Franklin Gardens and King’s Court Community.

Connect Café will create a free, welcoming space where families can come together, share a meal, learn, have meaningful conversations and build stronger connections with one another.

It’s about creating time and space to **bond, learn and connect as a community**.

We’re grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund for making this new programme possible.

We can’t wait to open the doors to Connect Café and welcome our community from September 12

19 young people. Two coding sessions. Plenty of curiosity, creativity and experimenting!

We had a brilliant time supporting the Coding Taster sessions at Clay Farm, giving young people the chance to get hands-on with coding, create projects and explore what they can do with technology.

A big thank you to the parents and carers who brought them along and encouraged them to give it a go, and to and Trumpington Pavilion for making the sessions possible.

And when parents start asking, “Will there be more?” we know the curiosity has been sparked. 😊

The school holidays may be winding down, but the gaming isn’t! Your child gets a message from someone they regularly play with: 🎁 “I’ve got a free gaming code for you. Just click this link and log in.” Would they know what to do next? It might look genuine, but the account could have been compromised and the link could be designed to steal their login details. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warns that gaming-related phishing can use fake offers and promises of free gaming rewards.

🛡️ Encourage young gamers to think before they click, keep passwords and personal information private, use 2-step verification where available, and tell a trusted adult when something doesn’t feel right. Most importantly, make it easy for them to say, “I think I clicked something I shouldn’t have.” Online safety isn’t about making children afraid of technology. It’s about giving them the confidence to make safer choices online.

Autumn term is loading…

The laptops are out, the chargers are everywhere 😅 and we’re getting ready for another exciting term of Elenasy Code Club!

We’re looking forward to welcoming back our learners for more coding, creativity, problem-solving, online safety and plenty of opportunities to build and explore together.

There’s something exciting about getting everything ready and knowing these screens will soon be filled with ideas, projects and lots of “Look what I made!” moments. 💜

We are delighted to share that Cambridge City Council is supporting our Autumn Term Screen-Free Play and Connection Sessions for Children and Families.

Building on the community we’ve been growing together, children and families will continue to come together each week for LEGO, chess, board games, creative challenges and age-appropriate online safety activities. Through play, children will strengthen problem-solving, teamwork, creativity and communication skills while building healthier digital habits.

We have some exciting news to share!

We are delighted that Elenasy CIC has been awarded funding through the Connecting Cambridgeshire Digital Hub programme.

This means we can do even more to support children, young people and families across the Darwin Green, Franklin Gardens & King’s Court Community with access to digital devices, creative technology, digital skills and online safety in a fun, welcoming and supportive environment.

This investment builds on the digital learning opportunities we’ve been creating over the past year, including our Code Club delivered in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation. It’s another step towards our vision of helping people learn, play, connect and thrive through technology.

A huge thank you to Connecting Cambridgeshire for believing in our vision and investing in our community.
