Outdated Data Systems in Nigeria: A Crippling Disadvantage in Public Safety

My recent visit to a police station in Abuja revealed a concerning reality: data collection and storage still rely on paper ledgers instead of digital solutions. This outdated system poses significant consequences for national security and public safety.

Imagine searching for a missing person in Aba, only to discover they might be detained hundreds of miles away in Jos due to non-digitized records. This lack of a centralized database can have tragic ramifications, leaving families uninformed about their loved ones' whereabouts.

Moreover, without a digital record of arrests and detentions, accurately tracking individuals in police custody becomes impossible. This lack of accountability creates a dangerous blind spot, hindering effective crime detection and jeopardizing detainee well-being.

The time for change is now! We must embrace data-driven solutions to enhance efficiency and save lives. Key steps to address this issue include promoting Data Literacy Initiatives, investing in modernization, and implementing robust Data Security Measures.

This issue extends beyond a single incident, highlighting a broader challenge across various sectors in Nigeria. A collective effort is needed to advocate for a data-driven future that prioritizes public safety and accountability.
