Ribbed floor construction is not new method as far as building construction is concerned. However, what seems to be new is the introduction of polystyrene to achieve this method. Clay hollow pots and sancrete hollow blocks are the popular and traditional materials used for ribbed floor but on the rise now is polystyrene which I personally consider a better option.

Polystyrene, now one of the construction materials is produce from synthetic polymer made from monomers of the aromatic hydrocarbon styrene(sorry to bring you back to organic chemistry 😊). Research made me to understand that expanded polystyrene is made from 98% air and only 2% material. This makes it possible for its lightweight and ease of moulding or cutting into desired sizes and shapes.

We recently adopted it at my site as we desired and it becomes necessary that we find way to reduce weight on the project. This reduction in weight will lead to reduction of the stresses that come on the foundation.

Polystyrene for ribbed floor slab offers many more benefits which includes and not limited to; light weight, improved fire resistance, and economy. In the previous slabs on this project, the slab thickness was 150mm. With ribbed floor of polystyrenes, we will be casting not more than 50mm. That's a huge reduction in concrete cost right? It is very much more economical than full concrete slab.
