A striking billboard in Tehran, Iran, featured Leonardo da Vinci’s famous depiction of the Last Supper alongside a message honoring Jesus as “the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, [and] messenger of God.” The billboard appeared in 2024 during controversy surrounding the Paris Olympics opening ceremony and its disputed depiction of the Last Supper.

There is an interesting irony here. Islam does not accept the Christian belief that Jesus is God incarnate or the Son of God. Yet the billboard uses unmistakably Christian imagery of Jesus and the Last Supper while publicly giving Jesus the title Messiah.

And that title is significant. The Qur’an itself repeatedly calls Jesus al Masih, meaning “the Messiah,” and describes Him as the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary. However, Islamic theology understands that title differently from Christianity and explicitly rejects Christ’s divinity.

So while Iran’s message does not proclaim the full biblical Gospel, it is still striking to see the name of Jesus publicly honored in the heart of a Muslim majority nation.

And honestly, there is something else worth noticing. Even those who reject who Jesus truly is still cannot completely erase His place in history. His name continues to appear on billboards, in art, in books, in conversations and across nations.

May the Lord draw the people of Iran to Himself, protect Christians who faithfully follow Christ there, and give the Iranian people the freedom to seek and worship Jesus without fear.

Jesus is not merely a prophet. He is the Messiah, the Son of God, the Savior of the world. ❤️✝️
