As a computer user, it is important you do not have too many programs running at the same time. Each running program consumes a bit of the system's resources. Having multiple open windows for the same program (e.g. having three Word documents open) also lowers resources as each window takes up a bit of memory and processing power.
If you are not using an open file or program, close it so that the files/programs you are working in can speed up a little.

One of my favourite computer maintenance tips is using Windows Task Manager. Once you start working with this tool, you’ll find it easier to spot unusual activities on your computer. It will teach you about the inner workings of your PC, the performance, disk usage, and network usage. Using Windows Task Manager will make you understand which programs use up a lot of RAM and helps you identify unwanted processes, giving an instant boost to your computer’s speed.
The fastest way to access the tool is by searching for it in the Start menu environment of your PC.

Backing up data is essential. You never know when something might go wrong and cause irreparable damage or loss of information. Aim to backup data at least once per week or at least once per month; this depends on how frequently the data changes or gets updated by users in your organization or by you.

Almost every laptop owner has experieced drops, bumps and slips which result in unsightly dings that leave your computer looking less-than-loved. If you’re like most people who travel with their PC, safeguarding against accidents can feel next to impossible when packing your PC away into a carry-on. An exposed laptop is vulnerable to all of the elements of travel you likely want to protect it from.
Whether you’re traveling business-class or to a classroom across campus, shielding your PC against the elements starts with a protective case. There are a few different styles of protection that offer differing levels of armor and functionality.
A shoulder bag stands out among these different levels of protection. It is specifically designed to accommodate your laptop and necessary peripherals. The dedicated laptop messenger bag offers the most padded protection.

It is important for every PC/Smartphone user to regularly check for patch updates from manufacturers and make sure those updates are installed as soon as possible. Failure to do so can leave your device open for hacks with out-of-date vulnerabilities, especially when connected to the Internet. Set a monthly, or even better a weekly, schedule to ensure your operating system is up-to-date.

Heavy performance tasks generate a lot of heat in desktop computers and laptops. The problem is keeping your laptop on the desk where the heat can’t circulate. Fortunately, you can invest in a laptop cooler stand with a USB-powered fan to avoid overheating. Desktops don’t have the same issue, but in their case, the fan-cooling areas have to be kept clean to prevent the CPU or GPU from overheating. You can also help your computer by closing unnecessary processes and browser tabs and running only the tasks you need for your work.

Note that periodically clearing the cache (memory) and cookies from your Internet browser(s) is another maintenance suggestion. It is highly recommended that you do thid every two weeks, for two major reasons:
1. Clear cookies to fix:
- Sign-in problems
- Error messages about setting user cookies
2. Clear cache to fix
- Pages that freeze or don't finish loading
- Outdated pages with old content
- Online applications that don't respond
There are a number of browsers with different methods to clear cache and cookies. Google the procedure to follow for your specific browser, and you should be fine.

Every three to six months it is recommended you do a thorough cleaning of your entire hardware system.
You can do this in a number of ways, including with a blower. However, it is important to use a blower that is designed for electronics cleaning. Blowers designed for other purposes, such as leaf blowers, may have too much power and can damage the delicate components of your PC.
Here are some tips for cleaning your PC with a blower:
Make sure the blower is turned off before you start cleaning.
Hold the blower at least 6 inches away from the components.
Do not blow directly on any moving parts, such as fans.
Be careful not to blow dust into other components.
Once you are done cleaning, turn off the blower and move the PC to a dust-free environment.

Some of the steps you can take to purge your system of junk files and programs include:
1. Uninstall trialware and other bloatware
2. Run disk cleanup software
3. Empty the recycle bin
4. Delete temporary files
5. Remove cache of offline web pages
Removing these useless programs and old junk files helps to free up more space than you realize. And this in turn ensures your computer runs better than its age.....

Oh yes, we all know that electricity and water aren't a good combination. Breadcrumbs (and the like) and laptop keyboards aren’t either.
One of the most important ways to ensure your laptop's longevity is to keep it away from food and beverages. But if you’re going to have a drink while working, make sure to keep your cup far enough away from the computer that, in case of a spill, liquid doesn't go directly on your laptop's keyboard.
Another option is to use a laptop stand that lifts your machine up, keeping it away from liquids and food.

Otherwise, if you're working at the desk while eating or drinking, place the computer as far away from the edge as possible. This way crumbs or liquid won't fall straight on the keyboard.
