In May 2026, Instagram head, Adam Mosseri and platform data have confirmed a massive pivot: “Sends per Reach” (DM Shares) is now the primary driver for explosive growth and unconnected reach. 

Why Shares are the New “Gold”.👇🏻
While Likes indicate passive approval, a Share signals deep resonance. When a user sends your content to a friend via DM, the algorithm interprets this as a high-value personal recommendation. Currently, a single share is weighted 3–5x more heavily than a Like when deciding whether to push your content to the Explore page or non-followers. 

The New Ranking Hierarchy
➡️ Watch Time & Completion Rate: Do they stay?
➡️ Sends (Shares): Do they tell someone else?
➡️ Saves: Do they want to come back?
➡️ Likes/Comments: Do they enjoy it?

What This Means for You as a Social Media Manager/ Brand👇🏻

• Create “Shareable” Triggers: Content that is highly relatable (“That’s so us”), educational (“I need to save this for later”), or controversial (“Can you believe this?”) will outperform aesthetically perfect but “quiet” posts.
• The 3-Second Rule: With the algorithm monitoring Watch Time above all, your hook must land in under 1.5 seconds to prevent users from scrolling past. 
• Keywords over Hashtags: The algorithm now functions like a search engine. Your caption keywords and on-screen text are now more important than a block of 30 hashtags. 
The Bottom Line: If you want to reach new audiences in 2026, stop asking for Likes and start creating content worth sending to a group chat.
