NOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR AND MUSICIAN DEREKTOR SAMIE UNVEILS VISION FOR THE NEXT ERA OF NIGER DELTA CINEMA

Filmmaker sets sights on global recognition for grassroots stories, cultural identity and technical excellence

LAGOS, NIGERIA — Emomotimi Oyabrade Metro-King Samuel, professionally known as Derektor Samie or MTRO, has unveiled a new slate of independent media projects aimed at redefining how stories from the Niger Delta are captured, packaged and presented to audiences around the world.

Operating through his digital creative platform, , the filmmaker, director, editor and musician is positioning his creative operations toward a new generation of grassroots cinema—one that combines raw cultural storytelling with technically driven filmmaking, action choreography and visual production.

A LEGACY BORN IN THE NIGER DELTA

Hailing from Angala-Oweigbene Town in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, Samuel's creative journey dates back to 2014, when he founded the musical collective Compass Boys.

By 2016, his interest in storytelling had expanded beyond music and into visual production. This transition led him to become a founding member of Exclusive Divine Talented Production (EDTP).

Over the past decade, Samuel has developed into a versatile technical force behind the camera, working across cinematography, editing and directing on regional independent productions, including The Source.

His evolving career reflects a broader ambition: to use cinema as a vehicle through which the realities, struggles, culture and resilience of Niger Delta communities can reach audiences beyond the region.

«“Our stories are too deep to be told with a surface-level lens.”»

According to Samuel, the objective behind the new creative direction is to combine the dramatic intensity associated with Nollywood with stronger technical ex*****on and an authentic representation of Niger Delta life.

«“With the work we are putting out through , we want to give international audiences an authentic look at our people's resilience, combining Nollywood's dramatic grit with high-standard technical ex*****on.”»

THE NEXT CHAPTER

The filmmaker's new roadmap includes a series of upcoming short films, experimental visual projects and behind-the-scenes masterclasses designed to provide practical knowledge for emerging independent filmmakers.

The initiative is also expected to explore new collaborations with established production companies in Lagos and across West Africa.

Such partnerships, Samuel believes, could help create a stronger bridge between regional creative talents and larger commercial platforms.

FROM MUSIC TO CINEMA

What began as a musical journey has gradually evolved into a broader creative movement.

Through , Samuel is building a platform that brings together film editing, cinematography, independent filmmaking and cultural storytelling.

The larger vision is to create productions that do more than entertain, projects capable of documenting the people, places and experiences that make the Niger Delta unique.

As the region continues to produce a new generation of filmmakers, actors, musicians and visual storytellers, Derektor Samie's latest move represents another attempt to place Niger Delta creativity firmly within the wider Nigerian and international cinematic conversation.
