Over a year ago, Motion Paintings was invited by to make the waiting time at the WST bus station more pleasant and safe. They asked if we could do something with the glass U-profile facade and our lights?

During winter standing at 18 meters high and 300 meters long, it was a considerable challenge with the aim of creating a safer environment. Particularly during evening hours but there was potential to also brighten up the grey bus station during the day.

We eventually came up with the following (work) title: 'CONSTELLATION' ~ definition: 'Mutual position, apparent proximity of celestial bodies' / 'The set of factors that influence something or someone' Which ties in well with the investigative theme 'lekker wachten' (pleasant waiting) by De Reuringsdienst.

✨ 'Shifting Spectrum'

This summer we had the privilege to paint a Motion Paintings tunnel at Timisoara, the European Art Capital of Europe 2023.

During the day it is a static colorful abstract mural. In the evening, the mural comes to life by letting RGB lamps change color and intensity. The colored projection illuminates parts of the design while others fade, creating visual movement and bringing the mural to life.

With a bang, the current crisis introduced the general public to the field of microbiology. The profound implications which small scale phenomena (such as a virus) might have on us and our surroundings, became self-evident overnight.

Still, the molecular world can feel rather abstract, since one cannot properly see it with the naked eye. Our intuition for small things generally stops beyond a grain of sand. This wall aspires to make this hidden molecular world more accessible to the general public, through the act of zooming in.

The study of small things has a long standing tradition in the Netherlands. Starting with the acclaimed invention of the microscope by Zacharias Janssen around the year 1600. Some 74 years later, the first observations of unicellular organisms are made by Antonie van Leeuwenhoek. Fast forward to the year 1949 and Philips Electron Optics is producing the first Transmission Electron Microscope.

In current times, cutting edge Research and Development is still being conducted in Eindhoven by Thermo Fisher Scientific (who have been described as Eindhovens best kept secret). They kindly gave us a tour of their company, which served as the main inspiration to start exploring the microscopic realm.

Our design can be thought of as a playful, artistic exploration of organic shapes and their scales. Freely zooming and morphing between cellular, molecular and atomic worlds. Similar to the renowned Metamorphosis woodcuts by Escher, our graphic elements make a transition into new shapes along the horizontal axis. This ‘panoramic’ setup is especially well suited for a tunnel, since it allows the passersby to take in the work step by step.

Besides a spatial transition, we’re also making transition though time. Similar to shifting focus on a microscope, our coloured lights enable us to shift the focus within different layers of our design, making the graphics come alive. The changes in light will be tranquil (as to not distract cyclists and motorist). One hardly even notices it. However; each time a passerby will return, one sees the artwork ‘in a new light’.

The tunnel at the Welschapsedijk offers a window into the microscopic world; it’s an invitation to imagine it.

EINDHOVEN - In de tunnel op de Welschapsedijk in Eindhoven is deze week een lichtkunstwerk gemaakt. Van kleur veranderende ledverlichting gaat de muurschildering verlichten waardoor die tot leven komt.

Kind of strange that I've never posted this sublime video before. This is definitely the coolest project we've ever worked on and it's still going strong. It's the first permanent Motion Painting in public space and asks for more.

We have gained experience in projects that vary in scale and size. Most of them are temporary. Our ambition is to make more (permanent) light projects. Illuminate dark alleys, tunnels or other shady places, preferably in public space. We're always open for collaborations with different companies, municipalities and artists.

'A Window in Time' by Motion Paintings. This artwork was an interactive window into the history of Amsterdam. Motion Paintings based the story on the different artworks they found in the Stadsarchief Amsterdam. A nice moment to reflect on the past editions of Amsterdam Light Festival: what was your favorite artwork and why?
