Data centers are increasingly viewed as essential to the AI Surge, with a significant demand for capacity driven by the growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing in Europe.

Operators anticipate commissioning 65% more data center capacity in 2024, rising from 16MW to 26.4MW, while contractors expect a 61% increase, from an average of 14MW in 2023 to 22.5MW.

However, the industry faces challenges in building this capacity profitably and sustainably, particularly due to power availability and inadequate planning for energy infrastructure across the EU and the UK. Additionally, the data center construction supply chain has been disrupted by the pandemic, geopolitical issues, and armed conflict, leading to increased costs and delays.

With 65% of contractors and 58% of operators expecting a greater risk of disruptions in 2024, concerns about environmental regulations, geopolitical instability, and climate risks are paramount.

These challenges could hinder the ability of operators to seize commercial opportunities and may slow the pace of digital transformation across Europe, with seven out of ten respondents agreeing that supply chain shortages will impact digitalization efforts over the next five years.

Uptime Intelligence asked operators to classify the workloads supported by the densest deployments in their
data center and the outcome suggests that the densest IT workloads supported today are still primarily business applications and high-powered computing (HPC).

The predominance of business applications and high-performance computing (HPC) can be attributed to their critical roles in driving efficiency and innovation. Business applications are essential for day-to-day operations, enabling organizations to manage processes, analyze data, and support decision-making. These applications require robust infrastructure to handle large volumes of transactions and data processing, which is why they are often prioritized in high-density environments.

On the other hand, HPC is vital for tasks that demand significant computational power, such as scientific simulations, complex modeling, and data analysis. HPC systems leverage multiple resources to perform intensive calculations quickly, making them indispensable for industries like research, engineering, and finance. As organizations increasingly rely on data-driven insights and advanced analytics, the need for HPC capabilities continues to grow, reinforcing its position as a primary workload in densely populated data centers.

The data center industry is increasingly power-intensive due to the growing demand for data processing and storage, driven by the rise of data analysis, artificial intelligence, and high-performance computing.

Consequently, this surge in energy consumption has raised concerns about environmental impacts, including the depletion of natural resources, greenhouse gas emissions, electronic waste, and pollution.

Our Tier 3 data center is located in the Sogn og Fjordane region of Norway and is powered entirely by 100% renewable hydropower. We take advantage of the cool climate of our Nordic location to cool our data center and achieve exceptional energy efficiency, further optimizing energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.

Our facility achieves an exceptionally low Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE). Remarkably, only 10% of our energy is allocated to cooling and overhead—far below the industry average—resulting in an impressive 82% reduction in energy intensity compared to typical data centers.

Datacenters are essential to the digital economy, and demand for them is expected to rise significantly, making them a key area for growth and investment. However, the costs of running these facilities are also increasing, mainly due to higher electricity prices and greater energy use.

A report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) shows that electricity is the largest ongoing expense for datacenter operators, accounting for 46% of spending for enterprise datacenters and 60% for service providers. As datacenters handle more demanding workloads, especially with the growth of artificial intelligence, electricity consumption is set to rise sharply, with total global use expected to double by 2028.

The IDC report also points out that electricity prices are rising due to supply and demand issues, regulations, and the impacts of climate change. Their analysis found that electricity costs could increase by more than 15% annually in various scenarios, with some showing growth over 20%. To address these rising costs, datacenter operators should focus on improving energy efficiency through different methods and invest in renewable energy sources like solar or wind. This will help manage operational expenses and support sustainability efforts, benefiting both datacenter operators and their clients.

Data from the 2020 Uptime Institute survey showed that only 42% of workloads were off-premises at that time. In 2024, this figure has increased to 55%, and it is projected to reach 58% by 2026. This shift towards external data centers and cloud services highlights the growing need for flexibility and scalability in managing IT resources.

Separate Uptime survey data further reveals an overall increase in IT capacities for both on-premises and off-premises environments. More than half of owner-operators (54%) and colocation providers (56%) cited capacity expansion as the main reason for their increased spending on IT infrastructure.
