The race to replace lithium-ion batteries is heating up with multiple contenders, including solid-state (higher density, safer but costly), silicon-carbon (massive capacity but shorter lifespan), sodium-ion (cheaper and abundant but lower energy), lithium-sulfur (huge density potential), lithium-air (gasoline-level energy), iron-air (grid storage via rusting), and structural batteries (load-bearing power sources). While some like silicon-carbon are already in Chinese smartphones and iron-air is deployed in grids, others remain lab-bound. AI-driven battery management and improved recycling techniques are also extending current battery life and sustainability.
