In 1994, engineer Masahiro Hara invented the QR code at Denso Wave to track automotive parts, but its worldwide success was sealed when his company made the technology an open, patent-free standard.

This decision to forgo profit allowed the QR code to become a universal tool, evolving from an industrial solution into an essential part of daily life for billions in areas like payments and healthcare.

By making his invention a gift to the world, Hara demonstrated how open-access technology can save industries billions and fundamentally change society.
