Tū Ātea appoints Shane Taurima as Pou Matua

Tū Ātea is pleased to announce the appointment of Shane Taurima (Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine) as our new Pou Matua, Group Chief Executive.

Shane is currently Kaihautū, Chief Executive, of Whakaata Māori, which he has led for eight years through significant digital and organisational transformation and strengthened financial resilience.

Tū Ātea Chair Robin Hapi says Shane brings the strategic, commercial and cultural leadership needed as Tū Ātea moves into its next stage of development.

Shane says he is honoured to be entrusted with the role.

“Tū Ātea stands on the shoulders of generations of Māori leaders who fought for recognition of spectrum as a taonga and for Māori rights and interests in the technologies and infrastructure shaping our future.

“I look forward to working alongside the people of Tū Ātea to build on what has already been achieved and create enduring value and opportunity for our people.”

Shane will take up the role in February 2027, succeeding founding Chief Executive Antony Royal. We acknowledge Antony's significant contribution to building Tū Ātea, bringing together the Group's spectrum assets and businesses and laying the commercial and operational foundations for its next stage of growth.

Full circle moment!

Last year, Suede Sadler was part of Empathy, the winning team at the AI Hackathon at AUT South Campus, developing an idea to help identify learning challenges for tamariki.

Along the way, the team spent time at Tū Ātea, using our space as they developed their idea and prepared to present at the Aotearoa AI Summit.

One year later, they’re back where it started, but this time Suede and fellow Empathy team mate Colin, have been invited back as judges for the Aotearoa AI Hackathon Festival 2026.

Pretty cool to go from competing and taking out the win, to helping judge the next generation of ideas.

He pānui whakahirahira | Exciting news from across the Tū Ātea Group!

We're proud to welcome Jo Stansfield to the Tū Ātea whānau as the new Chief Executive of Tū Ātea Network Services Ltd.

Jo joins us from Fortysouth New Zealand, where, as Chief Operating Officer, she played a key role in building one of Aotearoa's leading infrastructure businesses. She will lead Broadtech, Johnston Dick & Associates (JDA), and TransWorks, bringing together more than 50 years of engineering heritage, national transmission capability, and specialist data centre expertise to help keep Aotearoa connected.

At the same time, we'd like to acknowledge Merv Taylor for his outstanding leadership during a significant period of change. Merv has helped guide Tū Ātea Network Services through its transition to full Māori ownership and has strengthened the foundations for the future. We're grateful that he will continue to share his knowledge and experience as Strategic Advisor.

Nau mai, haere mai, Jo. We look forward to the journey ahead, while also extending our heartfelt thanks to Merv for his leadership and dedication.

Last week we hosted our second lot of tauira from Ōtāhuhu College, for our school holiday work experience programme.

Throughout the week they gained hands-on experience, visited Transworks, learned more about internet infrastructure and connectivity, and explored career opportunities in the industry.

To wrap up the week, the tauira presented what they'd learned to our kaimahi, Stevie and Moresby, who had been mentoring them throughout their placement.

Ko te reo te mauri o te mana Māori.

📍We attended a special kaupapa tonight as Google New Zealand and Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori celebrated the launch of a new Google Maps voice for Aotearoa.

This milestone builds on the partnership established in 2023 to support te reo Māori in the digital world. The new AI-powered Aotearoa voice can correctly pronounce many te reo Māori place names, helping ensure the names of our towns and cities are heard as they were intended.

It's another step towards seeing and hearing te reo Māori become a natural part of everyday life.

This morning we held a whakatau to welcome Theo to the Feenix team.

Theo Benvie-Watson (Rongowhakaata, Ngāti Kaipoho) has joined Feenix Communications as a Junior Network Operations Engineer.

Last year, Theo was a recipient of our Young Māori Leaders Scholarship through AUT. Today, we're proud to welcome him as a kaimahi within our Tū Ātea whānau.

This is exactly what these initiatives are designed to achieve: creating pathways that support Māori talent from study into meaningful careers, where hard work is met with opportunity.
