AMS Mobile

AMS Mobile AMS mobile is about sending, capturing and sharing of data using mobile devices. AMS is the proprietary product of Kinross Group.

Enterprises typically want to enable their staff/contractors to share data with them by using mobile devices. AMS is a DIY software that gives businesses the power to make this happen, themselves. The "apps" are designed and built by the business themselves and the data is set up to route to emails with attached documents or integrate with existing systems. There are versions for iOS and Android.

It is used by Contractors, Construction, Government departments, Logisitics operators, Agri Businesses, Community Health and Service companies.

A simple question in 2018 changed the way TDM Construction Ltd captured its trucking data. Marc Black asked the office to provide him with the details of a job.

“I was handed a stack of dockets,” said Marc. “This got me thinking. Why can’t we get trucking job details delivered to our phones or tablets in real time?”

TDM’s old paper-based system involved drivers filling in a docket each time they took a load on board. There might be nine different loads carried for three different clients over the course of a working day – and that’s just for one driver. At day’s end, all the dockets would be placed in a container in the truck yard for collection by office staff, and the drivers would go home.

A day or two later, all the information from the dockets would be manually entered into spreadsheets in the head office, and the process of accounting and invoicing could begin. But Marc wanted something better.

Marc started with Google, researching mobile data capture in the trucking industry. His online research turned up an AMS affiliate – HHA Associates. So Marc got in touch and found himself talking to software analyst Sarah Bennet.

“I explained what I had in mind and gave her one of our paper dockets. She agreed all the data I was looking for could be captured and made available online,” said Marc.

Sarah used the AMS platform to build a test version of the app Marc envisaged. Within a short time they had created a working version, which Marc gave to two of his drivers to trial for a fortnight. The drivers were equipped with rugged Samsung tablets and shown how to use the app in place of their old dockets.

The app design was intuitive, with simple drop down menus to select the relevant client and project name for each haulage job. Then all the driver had to do was enter the source (for example, a quarry or building site), docket number, tonnage and destination. At the end of the job the virtual docket was completed, and then automatically dispatched via the mobile phone network.

Marc Black says it’s made a big difference to efficiency. “Mum used to spend six or seven hours on data entry every week, and now she only needs an hour or so. Instead of manually entering every detail of every job, she just needs to check the information provided by the app.”

“If I’m at home and I need to invoice someone, I can do it on the spot. I don’t need to track the information down and wait until it arrives. And if Mum takes a holiday, I don’t have to take over her old data entry role. It’s not really productive for me to sit down for four hours of data entry at the end of the day.”

Marc found the whole experience refreshingly straightforward.

House PrePurchase Inspections

Joel quickly grasped the potential of the AMS platform to cost-effectively build his desired app.

“We’re looking to expand nationally,” says Joel. “With AMS I’ve been able to turn my business IP into a tool that I can put in the hands of any qualified builder, and be confident they’ll turn out standardised reports without delay. When you’re looking to buy a home, that’s the sort of service you need.”

Technology in Business: Adding Value

By now, the evidence is clear. Technology helps businesses survive and flourish. Mostly, it’s all about finding the companies and products that will work for your business.

Looking for efficiencies, ways to improve your business resilience; means that many businesses are being proactive about moving to mobile solutions to capture and share information.

Last week, I hired a Hybrid and traveled around the North Island of NZ to visit some of our customers. I learnt they didn’t want heaps of new AMS features. It already did much more than they were aware of. I learnt they really just need two things: the product to work for their business and responsive support when they need help.

Sometimes in technology companies you can become engrossed in new feature / product development, rather than improving existing services.

Read the AMS Case studies to see if AMS could work for you.

Mum, Dad & Daughter

Recently, I've been working with a family run business: CEO is Dad, Mum is Accounting, and their daughter is Admin /Product. In New Zealand, this is a very typical Small Business set up. Dad had a vision of how information should be flowing from his team of servicemen to the office. He is not an IT guy, but he knows his business. We began to translate the vision into mobile solutions. At every step of the way, we ask: what do you think? Is this what you imagined?

Working with Customers is great! Yes, I mean that. No egos, just getting the job done...well.

Joel Zwart is a qualified builder – and a worried one. He could see a disturbingly high number of hidden faults in the houses his friends and family were looking to buy.

We’re talking about leaky buildings, botched repairs and serious structural flaws. With a massive mortgage required to buy the average Auckland home these days, buyers ran the risk of being landed with some massive, unforseen bills.

Buyers still had the option of protecting themselves with a builder’s inspection report, which costs around $700. But that’s a lot of wasted money if you end up unsuccessfully bidding on a succession on properties. So Joel decided to put his expert building knowledge to good use, and set up a business called House Pre Purchase Inspections (HPPI).

Joel envisaged a custom HPPI app to run on mobile tablets.

Quinovic’s Franchise Services Manager, Tamsin Watson, thought property owners deserved a better level of reporting on their properties. The solution was simple in theory. If each Quinovic property manager had a mobile app that could pull down live data from the Quinovic system (QPMS), a unique inspection form could be created for each individual property.

Working with the AMS platform, Tamsin and her team built a customised property inspection app for Quinovic property managers.

“AMS pulls every detail and creates a form that’s tailored to the property. The system won’t let managers complete the inspection until they have physically checked each individual item,” she says.

“It puts more power in the property manager's hands,” says Tamsin. “They can access tenant, owner and rent details as well as a complete list of chattel locations. There’s no need to write anything down – just open the app and update your information. It’s a real time-saver.”

The AMS app has been rolled out to all users in the Quinovic group. “Now it’s just part of our business,” says Tamsin.

Changing how you do something is hard. Just changing your mobile device to a later model means that there is new stuff you have to deal with.

I just bought a Galaxy 9+. Very nice ...but...my Jabra earpeice would not work first up (essential for how I work) and another programe I use daily, SideSync, was unavailable on the Galaxy 9. So I had to go to Google and watch several different videos to solve my problems and source a new screen mirroring product. It's all sorted now, but it took effort and patience.

On the up side, I feel good, even a little smug, that I sorted it myself ! So worth it? Yep - better battery life, speed, a beautiful screen, and even better photo options.

Disruption, Kaizen, and Ice Cream

Just reflecting... With news of business failures, it begs the question which businesses will handle disruption competition better than others in 2018? Who will survive, and who will totally disappear?

It reminds me of the debate that occurred when TV became ubiquitous in the 1960’s. Going to the movies was suddenly threatened. The death of cinemas was pretty much declared. Theatre owners had to think hard.

So how did it all turn out. Did going to the movies die? And did movie theatres disappear?

The changes we experienced in NZ were: National Anthem gone, mobile ice cream sellers gone, half time break gone, weekly serials gone (best part!) and drastic changes in the size and set up of the theatres.

Businesses need to constantly rethink how to do things better. In particular, a focus on why people use their product or service, and how they can make it work better for them and the business. The Japanese have a word for it: Kaizen: change for the better.

Going to the movies is still a great experience – just different.

Great News!

Sarah Bennett from HHA Software said

" AMS is one of the most fantastic products I've used. Customers can do a lot of the business process automation themselves - it's that flexible and easy to use."

Together, with the HHA Freightman scheduling software, and the AMS mobile messaging platform, we worked on a process of transforming paper dockets from truck drivers into live data feeds. Win all round!

Thanks for your positive feedback Sarah. Made my day!
