On this Wardville dairy farm, cows take priority.

Adrian and his wife are 50/50 sharemilkers, and their 340 Friesian-cross herd have been enjoying the benefits of Herd-i.

What does good management actually look like at scale?

Feeding cows well has always been a point of pride for Tom Mawle. As his operation grew, he started thinking differently about what good management actually looks like at scale.

“For years we’ve always been a mob mentality,” he says. “We’d look at things as an average, as a group. Whereas now I think we’ve got to be way more efficient and look at individual cows on nearly a daily basis.”

Since installing Herd-i, the daily body condition score and lameness scoring he gets for every cow has changed how he manages condition throughout the season. Informed decisions about feed management can now be made before condition slips too far. Earlier detection of lame cows means earlier intervention, which is paying off in less antibiotic use and increased in-calf rates.

Combined with rumination data from Halter, he’s able to build a clearer picture of his herd, particularly through calving and mating.

Daily data enables better management decisions to keep Tom’s track record of well-fed cows in tip-top shape.
