Have your Amazon review counts suddenly dropped?
You’re not imagining it.
Amazon has started rolling out a major change to how reviews are shared across variations.
Previously, reviews were pooled at the parent listing level.
Now Amazon is tightening the rules.
Only variations that are truly similar (color, size, pack quantity) will share reviews.
Variations that differ in material, formula, model, performance, bundles, etc. will no longer inherit reviews.
What sellers may start seeing:
• Review counts dropping
• Some variations losing most — or even all — reviews
• Performance dips on affected ASINs
I recently saw this happen on one of the accounts I manage.
A parent listing with 16,000+ reviews was restructured and some variations dropped to zero reviews overnight, which immediately impacted conversion.
To stabilize performance we:
• Enrolled affected ASINs into Amazon Vine
• Focused on rebuilding variation-specific credibility
• Adjusted expectations on CVR while reviews rebuild
What sellers should do now:
1. Audit variation structures — ensure they meet Amazon’s “similar product” criteria
2. Expect review redistribution across ASINs
3. Plan review-generation strategies for affected variations
4. Re-evaluate how new variations are launched
In the long run this improves review integrity and customer trust — but in the short term many brands will see disruptions.
Curious to hear from other sellers and operators:
