2. What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Different experts have defined AI in various ways:

Bellman (1978): Automating human thinking processes like decision-making and learning.

Kurzweil (1990): Making machines do tasks that need human intelligence.

Rich & Knight (1991): Teaching computers to do tasks that humans are currently better at.

In short: AI is about making machines behave intelligently.

3. Four Approaches to AI:

a) Acting Humanly (Turing Test)

A computer passes the test if a human judge can’t tell it apart from a real person.

The Chinese Room Argument questions if following rules means real understanding.

b) Thinking Humanly

Tries to model how the human brain works (related to Cognitive Science).

c) Thinking Rationally

Uses logic and rules to make correct decisions or thoughts.

d) Acting Rationally

Focuses on making the “right” decisions to reach goals (this is the most common approach in modern AI).
