“You just defined the mission of Uhura Bionics in a few sentences.”

That wasn’t the question. It wasn’t planned. It just came out naturally in the conversation.

While talking about our concert, the conversation moved from performing with an electrolarynx to all those small, very human things we do with our voices every day.

And maybe that’s why this is one of our favorite moments from Konrad Zieliński's conversation with Dr Rupal Patel.

This time, the discussion goes back to the beginning of Uhura, why the company was created, what problems we are trying to solve and how Konrad’s own experience after losing his voice shaped the direction of our work.

They also talked about what we are building today. That includes Tik-Tak, Whitney and our upcoming app, as well as the role AI can play in making voice solutions more personal.

One of the main topics was the difference between simply being able to speak and being able to express yourself more naturally. Intonation, emotion, volume and the individual character of a voice all matter in everyday communication, and these are areas we want to keep developing.

What happens when you lose not only your voice, but also the ability to laugh, shout or sing the way you used to? 🎙️

Our co-founder Konrad Zieliński recently spoke with Projekt Pulsar about his experience of losing his larynx and the questions that later led to the creation of Uhura Bionics.

After a total laryngectomy, Konrad could still communicate using existing solutions. But communication was only part of what he wanted back.

He wanted to change his tone. Express emotion. Be louder when needed. Laugh, shout and sing.

That became one of the challenges behind Uhura: creating technology that does not stop at making speech understandable, but gives people more ways to express themselves in everyday life.

In the new episode of “Pulsar nadaje sygnał”, Konrad talks about his own experience, the beginnings of Uhura and the technology we are developing today.

"The voice I had before cancer belonged to a boy. I have grown up.” 🎙️✨

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to lose your own voice as a result of illness?

Konrad Zieliński lost his voice to cancer. But as he explains in a powerful feature by Wirtualna Polska, one of the most difficult aspects is that when you lose your voice, you also lose the physical ability to laugh or cry and with it, an important tool for regulating your emotions.

The story was written by award-winning Polish journalist and reporter Anna Kiedrzynek, who first wrote about Konrad for Newsweek at the end of 2018. Nearly eight years later, she returned to his story for Wirtualna Polska. This time not only to write about the voice he had lost, but also about the one he and the Uhura Bionics team are now building.

Today, our co-founder Konrad is rebuilding his voice with the help of artificial intelligence. It is a story about losing a voice, growing into a new one, and the technology helping make that possible.

“An inspiring story of a young Polish innovator who refused to let adversity stand in the way of his dreams.” 💡

Being featured on national television during the main evening news is a great honor and a chance to reach thousands of people. Katarzyna Grzęda-Łozicka’s report on "19.30" showcased the story of our co-founder, Konrad Zieliński, and the technology we are developing.

But there is much more behind this feature. It is driven by continuous R&D, securing critical grants, refining our device, and growing a team that believes losing a voice should never mean losing one's identity. Every step forward brings us closer to helping patients worldwide.

As you could see in our journey, technology can achieve incredible things. Earlier this summer in June, Konrad made history by performing live on stage, proving that losing a larynx doesn't mean losing the ability to sing and express joy!

More than 10,000 reactions, and multiple encouraging comments, show that this issue deserves broader public attention. Voice loss after laryngectomy affects people’s relationships, independence and ability to participate fully in everyday life. Such greater public awareness is an important part of creating meaningful change.

After a laryngectomy, communication can become a challenge in the moments many of us take for granted talking to family, returning to work, expressing emotions or simply joining an everyday conversation.

We have developed technology that can help people regain not only their voice, but also greater confidence, independence and connection with others.

What does everyday life after a laryngectomy really look like and why is improving the sound of a voice only part of the solution? 🎙️

On July 21, our co-founder Konrad Zieliński presented research from his PhD project during the annual conference of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS). His work explores how laryngectomy affects patients’ quality of life not only their ability to communicate, but also their relationships, independence and participation in everyday activities.

At Uhura Bionics, these insights shape the way we think about voice restoration. Clear and intelligible speech matters, but communication is also about joining a conversation over dinner, expressing emotions, speaking at work, staying connected with loved ones, and continuing to feel like yourself.

By combining patients’ experiences with clinical knowledge and technological development, we want to create solutions that respond to the realities of life after laryngectomy.

We are grateful to Konrad Zieliński, Gabriela Kołtun, Rupal Patel and everyone involved in this research and the conversations moving the field forward. 🚀

Something we've been holding close for a while is finally ready to share.

"The Diary of Experiences": a feature-length documentary about Konrad's story and the journey behind Uhura Bionics is officially on its way. 🎬

The film is directed by the wonderful Dorota Roś and produced by Zofia Kujawka. Last week, they pitched the project at Millennium Docs Against Gravity, the biggest and most renowned film festival in this part of Europe, and were awarded the Jacob Burns Film Center Award. Congratulations to the entire team. You earned every bit of this with your hard work!

The prize is a one-month artistic residency in New York for the film crew, but for us, it's so much more than that. We'll use this opportunity to strengthen the collaboration between Uhura's Polish and American operations, and to bring the realities of life after laryngectomy to a global audience that rarely hears these stories.

This project means a lot to us.

It has been almost two years in the making, and two more to go, and it's not just a film about technology. It's a film about people who have lost their voice to laryngeal cancer: in Poland, in the United States, and around the world, and about the broader community of atypical speakers who deserve to be seen and heard. It's about what happens when technology is built from a place of real human need, and when the motivation to pursue happiness becomes stronger than the obstacles in the way.

We hope this film reaches the people who need it most. And I'm grateful: to Dorota, to Zofia, to everyone who has trusted us with their stories along the way, for helping carry it this far.
