GeekMesh is a new initiative starting at Birzeit University for students to connect more with the modern scientific and technological events, projects and ideas. We will be hosting different kinds of sessions that hopefully will keep the students and the attendees updated with the rapidly changing trends, give them hands on the different emerging technologies, introduce them to local initiatives t
hat they can learn from or work with, and connecting them with the speakers. The sessions will take different kind of presentation, slideshow with audience asking questions at the end, interactive sessions or hackathons in lab. As well as presentations, we are concerned about nurturing team work by getting interested members involved in projects in the field of IT. It is expected to be involved in different variety of projects; hardware, software, and even research projects. Naming Philosophy:
GeekMesh is a two-word word! So, let us dissect it and see what it supposed to mean and reflect on. The word geek has many definitions that have been changing over time and there is no longer a definite meaning. Some prefer to define it, in the era of computers and internet, as " a person who is inordinately dedicated to and involved with technology." So abiding by this definition and the commonly accepted meaning of the term nowadays, it is a compliment. Mesh is a network topology in which nodes are connected with many redundant interconnections. In a true mesh network every node is connected to every other node in the network. Of course, "node" is the common word used in network topologies, a node in our group is a geek like you! To put it together, GeekMesh is supposed to reflect on a network of geeks. If one geek is good, a network, regardless of the topology, of geeks, communicating, socializing, thinking and working together, and etc.. is better. If the network topology of the geeks is "mesh", then it is perfect and has to result in the best geeky performance.
