Some people join a company...

John joined a cause, and then spent the whole of eight (8) remarkable years as Group Chief Financial Officer (GCFO) at Interswitch Group turning conviction to discipline and making sure the numbers never let that cause down...

Somewhere in between, he also mastered a skill business schools don't teach: holding the tension between investors chasing returns 📈, stakeholders chasing triggers and timelines 🗓️, and a company chasing its own long game; balancing all without ever losing the plot on what was actually for.

And through years of Lagos🇳🇬-to-Nairobi🇰🇪-to-Kampala🇺🇬-to-UK🇬🇧 "tours of duty" that often ran longer than anticipated, a family back home held the fort. That's not a footnote. It's half the story!

To John Maguire, our retiring GCFO...know, without a doubt, that you leave this business stronger than you found it - done quietly, competently, without ever needing the credit🫡

There’s that quiet moment every engineer knows too well...

🖼️ You’ve opened the pull request. The work is done, at least in your head. CI is green. And then…nothing! The 'pull request' sits there, waiting for someone 'free enough' to look. You refresh, you switch tabs. You start something else because you have to. By the time the comments arrive, the context is already cold!🤷🏽‍♂️

At The Borderless Experience, by Condia held last Friday in Lagos🇳🇬, Akeem Lawal, Managing Director for Payment Processing & Switching at Interswitch Group offered a compelling perspective to one of African fintech’s most consequential challenges: "How do we build innovation at scale without compromising trust, compliance, or resilience?"

Sitting in an engaging fireside conversation with Kemi Okusanya, CEO at Zest and moderated by Benjamin Dada, Founder & Publisher at Condia (formerly, Bendada.com), his take was clear: 'Fintechs cannot; and should not do it alone!'

The next chapter of Africa’s financial revolution requires stronger collaboration between fintechs, commercial banks, infrastructure providers, and most certainly the regulators. The role of institutions with the scale, regulatory depth and trusted rails to build the compliant layers beneath innovation can simply not be over-emphasized!

Education runs on workflows and embedded payments most people never see...

Last week, we hosted for Education Portal Providers; bringing together in a room the platforms and stakeholders quietly powering school fees, admissions, and edtech transactions.

We worked through what's working, what's frustrating, and where the gaps are - from portal providers navigating payment reconciliation to schools trying to make digital adoption less painful.

We also demonstrated what our Interswitch Payment Gateway (IPG) can do for the sector, but honestly, the more valuable part was listening, understanding and noting exactly where the friction plays out, to improve user experience from all sides.

across all levels remains a key social-sector vertical within which we're facilitating intuitive value-exchange at Interswitch, and sessions like this are how we make sure we're building FOR it, not just throwing existing payment products at it! 🚀

There's a persistent myth in software engineering: that quality begins when someone opens a code editor. Well...it doesn't...

It begins earlier, with a harder question most teams skip in the rush to ship: do we actually understand the person we're building this for?

Recently, at the Interswitch Engineering Academy, we pulled in the top brass; some of our most senior technology, engineering and quality assurance leaders sat down with our current cohort of trainees to make that case, not just with slides on "innovation," but practically engaging and walking through Design Thinking as a discipline from the perspective of engineering quality...

It's a shift from writing code to designing outcomes, and it's how we're building the next generation of future-ready engineers at Interswitch Group, who think like architects upfront before they punch the very first lines of code!👌🏽

No two paths to banking technology modernization look the same, and that was one of the real takeaways from our recent joint in-market engagement as Interswitch Group and Temenos with some of our existing financial institution customers across various tiers of Nigeria's banking landscape.

Over conversations at lunch, overlooking spectacular views of the Lagos city skyline, one theme kept surfacing: every institution is modernizing on its own terms; some are rebuilding foundations for the long haul. Others are moving in phases, unwilling to pause the value they deliver to customers today while they plan for tomorrow...

Neither approach is flawed; the real work from our perspective is helping each institution find the sequence that fits their reality, not a template👌🏽

That balance between transformation and continuity, ambition and operational stability, is where the most honest conversations about core modernization happen. And it's exactly the conversation we're committed to continuing 📈

Interswitch Group and Temenos recently brought senior business and technology leaders from Nigeria's leading financial institutions into one room, in our first in-market industry engagement since announcing our pan-African partnership 📢

Today, 'Core Banking' isn't the whole stack anymore. In most banking tech conversations, it typically just happens to be the loudest or most topical line item in it...
