Last week, at TechCabal's exclusive Power Brunch on Nigeria's Data Sovereignty, which featured important representation from the apex financial services industry regulator, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Babafemi Ogungbamila, our EVP for Operations & Technology joined industry leaders and key players to unpack what the topical 2027 data localization deadline really demands of payment infrastructure in Nigeria - beyond the headline pronouncement.

His take: 'Localization' is not a single switch, it's essentially predicated around architecture...

For a payments company, "where is the data" is really three or four different questions: where transactions are processed, where they're secured, where they're backed up, and where they're recovered from if something fails.

On readiness, his view was equally direct: infrastructure resilience should not be viewed as a precondition to start - it's actually the outcome of doing this right.

Concentrating everything critical within one jurisdiction can just as easily concentrate risk as reduce it, unless it's matched with genuine investment in local power, connectivity, and disaster recovery capacity ✅

In his view, the mandate should be read beyond just a compliance deadline, and more as a call to build 's own infrastructure to a standard that makes localization safe, rather than symbolic...

Sovereignty, done well, isn't just about pulling data home. It's about making home strong enough to hold it!👌🏽

We've caught sight of a couple of call cards from yesteryears making the rounds, so naturally, we hounded Big Mitch and detailed a search party to rummage through his drawers 😉...

And indeed, there it was at the bottom of the drawer: A relic from his days as an employee - long before "Founder & Group CEO" ever made it onto a card 😎

Funny how life works...

Speaking to an exclusive gathering of entrepreneurs and business leaders recently at the 'Business Leaders' Network', an initiative of the Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, held at The Capital Club in Lagos🇳🇬, Mitchell traced his own leadership journey back to Interswitch's early days, when discipline and ruthless prioritization kept the lights on until profitability arrived two years later, but which nonetheless remain core principles that the business keeps squarely in view as it grows and expands.

His metaphor of choice, The "𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘏𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘰𝘳𝘺" (as he coined it) summarily describes the often underrated genius of making a little go a long way, prioritizing needs, and running lean without running dry. It's a principle every business leader recognizes once named, but most rarely practice until forced to!

To echo some of Mitchell's closing thoughts to the audience: 'Real leadership isn't just steering growth; but also essentially about stewarding scarcity with the same seriousness you'll one day bring to abundance...'
