The iPhone is about to get bigger.
-------------------------------------------
Proving right months of speculation about larger screen sizes, Apple announced its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will both boast the largest displays in the company’s history.
The iPhone 6 will offer a 4.7-inch screen while the 6 Plus will boast a 5.5-inch screen, helping the Cupertino company compete with Samsung, which has built its brand around big screen Android smartphones.
The new phones boast fancier cameras, slightly improved battery life and processors that the company says are 50 times faster than the original iPhone, introduced in 2007, with a graphics display that is 84 times faster.
Both phones will ship Sept. 19 in the U.S. and eight other countries. Apple wants to be in 115 countries by the end of 2014. Pre-orders start Friday.
They will come equipped with iOS 8, the latest version Apple’s mobile operating system. It’s a free upgrade for owners of generations of iPhones 4s and later, iPad 2 and iPad mini users, and those who own the fifth generation iPod Touch.
And those who like comparatively smaller phones are still in luck: Apple plans to reduce the price of its smaller iPhone 5S to $99, and offer its iPhone 5C for free, both with 2-year contracts.
