I will be presenting in the Reclaim:Narratives of African Women artists symposium organized within the framework of Africa 2020 Season led by N’gone Fall in partnership with Ecole du Louvre and AWARE.
Titled Njabala: towards activating the pluralities of Ugandan Womanhood as a site of resistance, the presentation will tell of my genesis and practice -
Since 2015, I have worked closely with female Ugandan artists either in studio visits, interviews,
articles and exhibitions. My presentation will highlight a selection of these significant endeavours while
mapping a five years curatorial practice which has seen several records of and about Ugandan artists.
I will also speak about the
Njabala project which
is a multi-faceted campaign sourcing inspiration from a popular Ugandan folklore of Njabala to
facilitate conversations on womanhood in a Ugandan cultural framework.
The Njabala folklore
features a lazy married girl who doesn’t know how to do house chores and is consequently
reprimanded by the husband. The Njabala story serves as a warning for all girls to learn ways of
housekeeping and become good custodians of patriarchy. The Njabala forklore has a handful of
lessons and inspirations to the present-day feminism and we hope to unfold one lesson for each
edition of what will become an annual project. The activities of the Njabala project include exhibitions,
publications, and convenings aimed towards creating safe spaces for female artists to blossom.
