Cheap IT is a very expensive way to buy a false sense of security.

Most vendors sell you a piece of software and a promise. They install a lock on the door and hope for the best. We don't sell hope.

The tool is the easy part. The hard part is the human being watching the screen at 2 AM. Most low-cost plans don't include that person. They include a dashboard that stays green until it doesn't.

We charge more because we stay small on purpose. It lets us actually know your name and your network. You're paying for eyes on glass, not just a license key.

Think of your office like a kitchen at night.

Antivirus is the lock on the back door. It keeps the casual wanderers out.

EDR is a motion sensor in the hallway. It beeps when something moves.

MDR is the cook who stays late. She knows the ice machine makes a specific thud. She knows the walk-in kicks on at midnight. She can tell when a sound isn't the building settling.

A sensor beeping while you're asleep is just noise. You need the cook.

Most software comes with the security features turned off by default.

I spent yesterday morning fixing a firewall that was technically on, but doing nothing. The rules were set to allow anything from any source. The owner had paid for the hardware and the subscription. He thought he was protected because the box was in the rack and the light was green.

If you have a firewall or an antivirus, look for the "default" settings. Usually, those are designed to make things easy to connect, not hard to break. It's worth checking if your security gear is actually doing the work you're paying for.

Most phishing training is now teaching people to look for something that no longer exists...

Bad grammar. Weird spacing. The typo in the sender's name.

Whoever writes these has the same tools you do, so the spelling is clean, the tone is right, and the logo is correct.

A lot of the time it's a real reply on a real thread, because the vendor got compromised first.

Stop training people to spot the writing. Train them to spot the ask.

New bank details, an urgent wire, gift cards, a password. Anything on that list gets verified on a phone number you already had.

Not the one in the email. That rule holds whether the message is sloppy or flawless.

Oklahoma quietly changed its data breach law this year, and most business owners I talk to haven't heard about it yet.

It's called SB 626. Took effect January 1. Here's the part that actually matters for you.

The law rewards businesses that have "reasonable safeguards" in place: basic written policies and security practices, sized to your business. If you have them and something goes wrong, they protect you. If you don't, your exposure goes up.

Good news: for most small businesses, this isn't about buying expensive tools. It's documentation you build once and keep current. A risk assessment. Some basic controls. Staff training. A plan you'd actually follow if you had a bad day.
