I setup a hide on a pond with about an 80 degree field of view. Mounted my bench seat to a tree leaning at 45 degree on the edge of the pond that put my toes about 6 inch away from the water. About an hour in I heard a plop in the water to my right. The Blue Heron in the images below landed 20 feet away from me. Seconds later we made eye contact through a small opening in the foliage. I think both our eyes dilatated at the same time. Thankfully this Blue Heron flew away at an angle enabling me to see his eyes. Life is full of surprises.
