You cannot build community outward if you do not value people inward.
I have seen it too many times.
An organization posts about what a great place it is to work. Meanwhile the people who work there do not feel seen, valued, or heard. They are doing the work. Showing up every day. Carrying the load.
And nobody is saying thank you.
Not just to the high performers. Not just to the people with the titles and the visibility. To everybody. Because everybody plays a role. The person who shows up quietly and does the work nobody notices is just as important as the person in the front of the room.
When we make people feel like an afterthought, we lose them. Not always immediately. But eventually.
And people do not leave because of money. They leave because of how they were made to feel.
Here is what I know about trust. It is not built in the big moments. It is built in the small ones. The thank you that did not have to happen. The acknowledgment that came without an audience. The leader who said I was wrong and meant it.
It is okay to say I am sorry.
It is okay to admit your part.
It is not okay to overlook people and call it leadership.
If you want your community to trust you, start with the people already in your building.
The village starts inside.
