We are excited to announce a new community partnership!

Coding with Culture is partnering with The Atlanta Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. to bring an HBCU-centered mobile app design workshop to their third-grade scholars.

Students will work together as young designers and technologists, exploring how mobile apps are planned and created while building around something deeply connected to our mission: Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

This is exactly why Coding with Culture talks about a Kindergarten-through-HBCU pathway.

HBCU readiness does not begin during senior year.

It begins when our children are young enough to see Black institutions, Black innovation and their own brilliance as natural parts of their future.

School is back. So are we.

At Coding with Culture, we believe computer science education should start with the brilliance students already bring into the room: their culture, creativity, communities and ideas.

This fall, we’re continuing to build a Kindergarten-through-HBCU pathway through:

• Computer science and AI coaching
• Academic learning support
• Small-group learning
• School and youth organization partnerships
• HBCU and workforce pathways

Black and Brown students should not just learn how to use technology. They should see themselves as the people who shape it.

When one door closes for our youth, the village steps up to build a bigger one.

We are proud to highlight our middle and high school scholars in Atlanta who are taking major strides in the Nia Google Career Certification program!

These young Black men are actively working toward professional certifications in Cybersecurity and Project Management. Every two months, our cohort meets to connect these credentials directly to their futures: exploring high-paying career tracks, visiting digital campus opportunities, and mapping out supporting programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Positive youth development isn't just a phrase to us. It’s making sure our young men are equipped with real technical credentials, a clear pathway to higher education, and the confidence to lead.

Meet the newest instructional force joining the Coding with Culture team this summer.

We are incredibly proud to introduce Bryson, our newest CwC Intern and instructional mentor.

Bryson is a rising senior and honor student at Westlake High School. As the President of Westlake’s DECA chapter, he brings a deep understanding of business, marketing, and leadership to our ecosystem. In computer science, coding is only half the battle. The other half is knowing how to pitch, package, and position your ideas to change the world. That is where Bryson’s expertise shines.

This summer, Bryson is stepping into the classroom to co-teach alongside Coach Hicks at the historic Joseph and Evelyn Lowery Institute Camp. He will be guiding our middle school scholars as they build, debug, and present their own cultural tech projects.

Having high-achieving peer mentors in the room changes the game. It shows our scholars exactly what is possible on the pathway to excellence.

If your culturally responsive STEM curriculum consists only of changing sprite colors to brown or coding a hip-hop beat once a year, you are not teaching culturally responsive computer science; you are using culture as decoration. Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education (CRSE) in computer science is about cognitive framing, deep logic, and community relevance. The difference is: Cultural Decoration: coding a generic maze game but changing the avatar to resemble a historic Black leader. Culture-First: using the design thinking loop to interview community members, identify a local resource gap, and build a fully functional mobile app that connects families to that resource. When folks talk about AI and robotics, they name the same schools every time. MIT. Stanford. Carnegie Mellon.
Let me put you onto five they're leaving out.
Right now, on Black campuses you might never have heard mentioned in a tech conversation, our students are building the future. Not someday. Today.
North Carolina A&T built the first standalone AI degree in the whole state, and they graduate more Black engineers than anybody in the country.
North Carolina Central partnered with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, to open an AI institute they're calling the first of its kind in the nation.
Morgan State pulled a 9 million dollar grant to lead AI and cybersecurity research for the Navy.
Virginia State became the first HBCU ever to host the biggest robotics championship in the country.
And Florida A&M has students working hands-on with humanoid robots most college kids never get near.

Nobody told us these stories. We grew up thinking the tech future was being built somewhere else, by somebody else. It's not. It's being built on the Yard.
This is what we mean when we say the pathway runs from your kitchen table to the Yard. It is real, it is open, and it is waiting on our children.

FROM THE KITCHEN TABLE TO THE YARD, No. 03
Your child is using AI for homework. The question is not whether. It's how.
Let's be honest about where we are. The chatbot is right there. Your kid knows it, their friends know it, and "just don't use it" is a rule that lasts about as long as it takes you to leave the room.
So we're not going to pretend. We're going to teach.
There's a difference between a tool that thinks for you and a tool you think with. That difference is the whole ballgame.
When a kid types "write my essay," the machine thinks and the child disappears. Nothing got learned. But when a kid writes their own paragraph and asks "where is my argument weak," now the machine is a coach and the child is still in charge. Same tool. Two completely different futures.
That's the skill we have to put in their hands. Not avoiding AI. Directing it.
Teach them to ask it to explain, not to answer. To check its work, because it's confidently wrong all the time. To use it to push their thinking further instead of skipping the thinking altogether.
Because here's what's coming. The jobs our kids are walking into won't ask "can you avoid AI." They'll ask "can you direct it." The young people who learn to be the driver, not the passenger, are the ones who'll lead. And that habit, thinking for yourself while using powerful tools, is exactly what a real CS education builds, all the way to the Yard and into the field.
Don't ban the tool. Teach the judgment.
