They didn't just hear a story. They met a builder who looks like them.
This weekend with our Jack and Jill Greater Lake Allatoona scholars, kindergarteners and 3rd through 5th graders, we read about Mia, a young coder designing her very own HBCU game. Then our scholars got to coding and programming themselves. Yard by yard, they are learning to build worlds where their culture is the code.
That is what we do at Coding with Culture. Our children do not just learn to code. They learn to build worlds that carry who they are.

HBCU students and recent graduates: registration is open for Grow HBCU!

Coding with Culture’s FREE virtual cohort pairs Google Career Certificate coursework on Coursera with monthly live support, career conversations, and a capstone portfolio project—all within a community grounded in HBCU culture.

• Open to current HBCU students and HBCU alumni
• Complete coursework on your own schedule
• First live session in November 2026
• December holiday break from live sessions
• Sessions resume January 2027

Monthly meetings run approximately one hour, with 30 additional minutes of optional work time and office hours.

This is what it looks like in the room at Coding with Culture.

It's not quiet rows and worksheets. It's GENIUSES leaning in together, testing an idea, hitting a bug, and working through it until it clicks. That's the real work — not just getting the right answer, but learning how to think, create, and keep going when it gets hard.

We start with who our GENIUSES already are. Their culture, their stories, their brilliance. Then we give them the tools in computer science, design, and AI to turn that brilliance into something real.

Because our kids aren't just consumers of technology. They're creators, builders, and future leaders — on a pathway from kindergarten all the way to HBCU and beyond.

Parents and educators, let's talk about why this HBCU STEM investment matters for OUR children.

A $97.1 million federal investment announced earlier this month is supporting STEM research at 10 HBCUs and minority-serving institutions across the country.

Right here in Atlanta, Clark Atlanta University is receiving nearly $9.8 million to strengthen research in artificial intelligence and other STEM fields.

That's worth celebrating!

But here's what we want families to understand:

Our children don't have to wait until college to begin preparing for opportunities in computer science, engineering, artificial intelligence, and scientific research.

Early exposure matters. Quality instruction matters. Representation matters.

At Coding with Culture, we're building a Kindergarten-through-HBCU pathway that helps children develop computational thinking, design thinking, and the confidence to become creators of technology.

We want our children to see themselves not only attending HBCUs, but contributing to the discoveries and innovations happening at these institutions.

Our HBCUs are advancing innovation. Let's make sure we're preparing the next generation to be part of it.
