Japan's National Hospital Organization has confirmed that data-bearing hard drives ended up for sale on public auction sites—discovered only after a buyer contacted the hospital to flag a drive they'd purchased.
An investigation found 33 drives in total, containing names, addresses, and medical conditions for at least 186,900 patients and staff, with up to 510,000 people potentially affected by the breach.
Whether you perform it in-house or with a trusted IT partner, immediate, onsite data sanitization at the point of decommissioning helps to reduce risk before the asset ever leaves your control—and gives you verifiable proof it happened.
