The 401(k) might be the greatest financial scam ever invented. There, I said it.

Your employer gets a tax break. You get a locked box you can’t touch until you’re 60, invested in options someone else picked, managed by someone who’s never met you.

The one good thing is the employer match. That’s free money, and I’d always take it. But if you max the match, stop there, and call it a plan, you’re betting your whole retirement on a fund manager, a market you can’t time, and a government that taxes every dollar on the way out.

I’d rather bet on myself and risk losing it all than let someone else decide my outcome.

What’s one thing nobody told you about retirement until it was almost too late?
