I accepted a friend request from someone I hadn't thought about in 50 years. Within an hour, I knew it was a scam.

Here's what tipped me off: AI-generated profile pictures. Both the fake account AND a "tandem account" had that uncanny, slightly-off quality that gives away AI-generated photos. When two accounts show up together with AI photos, that's a coordinated scam operation.

I deliberately played along for a day to see how far it would go. The pattern was clear:
✓ They knew the relationship between me and the person they were imitating
✓ They used real photos sourced from social media
✓ They escalated quickly from "friendly greeting" to fishing for engagement
✓ The goal? Get access to my friend list and copy my photos to create a fake account using MY name

I reported and blocked both accounts immediately. Here's the thing: most people don't know what to do when this happens. They panic, create a new account, and leave the fake account out there scamming other people.

I wrote a step-by-step guide on how to spot these fakes, report them, and protect your photos. It covers the red flags, exactly how to report on desktop and mobile, and what Facebook's privacy settings actually look like (spoiler: they're buried).
