Not every gatekeep is personal. Sometimes it really is just that one guard.

Rejection is part of the process — even the work hanging on the wall next to yours gets a side-eye sometimes. The difference between artists who make it and artists who don't? They kept submitting anyway.

entrythingy · com has calls open right now. Just saying.

Memorial Day. Some of you are at the barbecue. Some of you are in the studio. Both are valid. Both are American as it gets.

Today we're thinking about the people who gave everything so we could make things — paintings, sculptures, ceramics, weird conceptual pieces nobody understands yet. That freedom to create isn't nothing.

Whatever you're doing today, we hope there's some art in it somewhere.

Whoever made that rule clearly wasn't an artist. (Or a baker. Or a castle builder.)

You contain multitudes. Submit accordingly.

Before you hit submit on that application, try this. Hands on hips, shoulders back, chin up. Two minutes. Weird? Yes. Does it work? Apparently.

We'll take every edge we can get.

What's your pre-submission ritual? Drop it in the comments.

Extremely abstract. No brush, no paint, no canvas. Just vibes and intention.

Honestly though? Some of the best work starts exactly like this. The thinking IS the process. And when you're ready to put it into the world — we've got the calls.

This is basically every artist before hitting submit. Brain spiraling, heart refusing to quit.

We're in our "heart" era over here too. More calls. Newer venues. More sharing, more showing up, more doing the thing even when the brain has opinions.

We believe in you. Keep going.

What does your brain vs. heart conversation sound like before you submit? 👇

Contrast in Color: $1K Competition closes TOMORROW

The Pennsylvania Journal of Arts and Sciences is seeking work that matters to you, in whatever form that takes. Paint, photograph, sculpt, code, experiment—all mediums welcome. One artist will receive $1,000, and finalists land in our upcoming print issue. The prompt is intentionally open: show us what your practice looks like right now, whether that's through material choices, process, or the image itself. Submit high-resolution files alongside a 200-word artist statement about how the work came together.

This is a genuine opportunity to have your work seen by editors and readers who care about the intersection of visual art and critical thinking. Beyond the main award, you can simultaneously pursue additional editorial distinctions during submission. We're not looking for a particular aesthetic or message—we're looking for work that reflects where you actually are as an artist. If you've been sitting with pieces you believe in, this is the moment to document them and send them out into the world.

⏰ Deadline: May 14, 2026
💲 Entry: from $14

"Then what are we fighting for?" — often attributed to Winston Churchill, when asked to cut arts funding during wartime.

Whether he said it or not, the question still lands.

Art isn't decoration. It's not a nice-to-have. It's the whole point. And right now, artists everywhere are making the case just by showing up and doing the work.

Go make your work. Submit it. Put it in the world. That's not small — that's the whole thing.

This is fine art. (Art about the art of making art work.)

If this image made you laugh and then immediately feel tired — you're doing it right. Being an artist means wearing approximately 47 hats, and somehow still finding time to actually make the work.

The one thing we can help with? Finding the calls worth applying to, so at least that part takes less energy.

Pricing is the conversation no one teaches artists to have.

Too high feels risky. Too low feels like you're apologizing for your work. There's no perfect number — but there's a number that respects what you actually made.

This meme is blunt about it, but it's not wrong. The collector who asks you to come down $200 probably didn't hesitate at their last Stanley Cup purchase.

What do you wish someone had told you earlier about pricing your work?

Applying to that call you've been sitting on since Tuesday? This is your sign.

Go after it. Ask. Step forward. The worst they can say is no — and honestly, that's just information.
