All set up in my cozy corner.
The place for relaxing, reading, and crocheting.
But tonight, it's for working from my tablet because I can't make it up the stairs to my home office.
And this is what adaptability and accessibility looks like for me.
Laying down on my loveseat, wireless keyboard on my lap, tablet connected to a larger screen, and using a footstool as a mouse pad.
How do you set up your work area on the days you're not 100% ?

The last 1.5 weeks have been utter chaos in my household.
My husband and I made the decision to bring our bedroom to the first floor because of my disabilities and health challenges. That meant his office had to move upstairs. And my "cozy corner" had to move downstairs.
But my home office is still UPstairs, and I can't get to it right now because it has taken me 10 days to get THIS room squared away.
But squared away it is. And I can now use my tablet to get some much needed and overdue work done. Along with my 3 "coworkers" 😂
It's time to adapt and overcome.
How do you adjust to changes in your business?
Video Description: compiled of a series of images. Image 1: Person wearing glasses and a blue hat reclines on a couch with a tabby cat nestled behind their shoulder. Sunlight streams through a nearby window with plants and artwork. Image 2: a dog dressed in a gray sweater reclines near two wall-mounted monitors displaying documents and spreadsheets. Image 3: Dog in red collar lies on a blanket beside a desk with dual monitors, keyboard, pegboard, and storage bins. Workspace is organized and actively used.

I get asked what got me into digital accessibility. And the answer... is me.
I am my own target demographic.
Because of my disabilities and chronic health conditions, there were websites I couldn't use and it pi**ed me off.
So rather than preach and whine about it, I decided to learn everything I could about it and niche down my web design business to focus on it.
I am passionate about removing barriers so not only can those that need them removed benefit, but so do the business owners who have taken the time to learn about digital accessibility.
That being said...no web work for me today because it's a cozy corner kind of day.
Usually happens when I've pushed it too hard the day before, didn't get enough sleep, my mental health is s**t, or one of my chronic health conditions is flaring.
The culprit today... is likely a combination of too little sleep and adjusting to a new routine.
Today was the 2nd day in a row I walked the loop that is our driveway. In an effort to improve my sleep hygiene, I am efforting to be more physically active and at least get me back to the 2,000 step average i had before everything went to s**t.
A few weeks ago I would be aggravated and annoyed that my body was forcing me into a down day. But as I try to shift my mindset, accept "retirement" and move forward in this balance of activity and rest; I find myself annoyed still but with no aggravation. I had things I wanted to do today. But alas, my body has other plans. So I'm just going with it.
How are you today?

Did you know that I'm writing fiction under a pen name, Nikki Mayo - Author ? I love the fact that indulging in the writing as a creative outlet, it is helping me bridge the gap in web design services here. I can help more people by teaching basic digital accessibility design concepts in non techy terms than I can trying to do it all myself. So that's what I'm doing. What do you want to learn about?

Ya know what's pretty awesome? After I shared this, I had a fellow spoonie reach out that was interested in joining forces. The things I can't do she can and vice versa. So website maintenance services may still be on the horizon as we navigate our collaboration. ❤️ Stay tuned.

This is not my normal home office.
This is the spare/guest room that also acts as my craft and music room.
But the hits keep coming and our upstairs toilet isn't working so we had to turn the water off. My home office is upstairs. I can only do the stairs twice a day right now because of my health. This makes going up and down the stairs to use the main floor bathroom if I work upstairs a smidge problematic.
Sooooo... I brought my tablet and lap desk downstairs so I can still get work done when I can.
These two, Piper (cat) and Andy (Great Dane/Lab Mix Dog) decided to join me.
I guess work can wait a few for minutes...

I am a ceramic sculptor and teaching artist living in coastal Maine with my husband, son, two dogs and a cat. Andy (a great dane/lab mix) is my current service dog, and Kane (a german shepherd) is my retired service dog). All of the animals are rescues.
It is in my basement studio where I create sculptures that engage, entertain, and invite conversation. My signature anthropomorphic style of giving animals humanistic personalities is a favorite among collectors. In addition to these ceramic animal sculptures, I also create polymer clay charms, ceramic art tiles finished with cold finishes, glazed ceramic tiles for backsplashes, resin art miniatures, and more. I have all these different creative outlets so that no matter what level of disability I’m facing for the day, I can still create.
As a disabled Veteran artist, I feel that I possess a unique perspective in the Maine art community and I use that as a strength as an educator and advocate for arts accessibility (in all its forms) and arts/creativity in health. In 2018, I was selected to be a teaching artist leader with the Maine Arts Leadership Initiative (MALI). In addition to MALI, I am a member of the Maine Arts Education Association (MAEA), National Arts Education Association (NAEA), and the International Sculpture Society (ISC).
Before I started pursuing this new artistic passion, I was a combat medic in the Army with 3ID. I won't bore you with the details of my medical retirement and acquired disabilities, but you can read them on my blog if interested (www.shawnabarnes.com/blog)
Thank you for stopping by! Won't you join me in my journey?
