I’m all for functional packaging, but maybe we should make sure the handle doesn’t look like it’s giving the baby a giant pacifier. 👶🍼 Or brings new meaning to "you'll poke your eye out ". 👀

Packaging design lesson: Always check the dieline, the photography and the final assembled box together. Because sometimes a perfectly innocent design can become…well, hilarious. 😆

📚 Summer Book Club Pick: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

What does a book about success have to do with creative professionals? A LOT.

Outliers explores the idea that success isn’t just about talent or hard work. Opportunity, timing, experience, environment and the people around us all play a role.

For creatives, that’s a great reminder:

✨ Your experience matters. Every project, mistake and challenge adds to your creative toolkit.

🎨 Your opportunities matter. Sometimes the right project or client opens a door you didn’t even know was there.

🤝 Your people matter. Mentors, collaborators, clients and creative communities can shape your growth.

⏰ Timing matters. Being in the right place with the right skills at the right time can make a huge difference.

And maybe most importantly: Don’t underestimate the value of putting in the reps. Creativity gets stronger with practice, curiosity and experience.

As creative professionals, we often focus on the finished work. Outliers is a good reminder to look at everything that happened behind the scenes to get there.

Take HelloFresh, for example. Their packaging is designed to do more than just look good—it helps organize, protect and transport all those ingredients while giving customers clear instructions on what goes where when it’s time to recycle.

That’s a lot of jobs for one box!

Good packaging design is about finding the sweet spot between function, branding and sustainability.

Because the best package isn’t just the one that looks great—it’s the one that makes sense from production to your kitchen… and eventually to the recycling bin.

Is it shampoo? Is it conditioner? 🤔

With Odele, apparently the answer is: Good luck. 🤞

The bottles are so similar, I feel like I need to read the label three times before I put anything on my head.

As a designer, I appreciate a clean, cohesive look.
As a person standing in the shower with shampoo in one hand and conditioner in the other… I would like some visual hierarchy, please. 🥺

Because sometimes, making products look like a family is great branding. Making them look like identical twins? Maybe not so much.

Design lesson: If your customer has to squint to figure out which product they’re holding, your packaging might be too consistent.

From smudged notes to awkward scissors, spiral notebooks, and desks that were clearly designed by a righty… lefties have learned to adapt!

But being left-handed can have its advantages—especially when it comes to creativity. 😉🎨

Bringing multiple brands together into one cohesive look is no small feat.

Over the past year, I had the opportunity to work with Cargill to help bring their rebrand to life by designing new bag artwork, creating realistic single-bag mockups, and developing pallet mockups across multiple product lines.

The challenge? Unifying products that originated from at least five different businesses into one consistent brand while still making it easy for customers to identify products by animal category.

Strong packaging is more than great design—it's about creating clarity, consistency, and confidence.
