Great engagement at last week's Neev Data–Serrala Partner Innovation Boot Camp, with over 50 partner professionals joining from across geographies and areas of expertise.

We structured the boot camp around two complementary perspectives.

The first half focused on the broader challenges enterprises face in managing growing data volumes, governing historical information, modernizing content management, and retiring legacy systems. We explored how Neev's solutions help customers address these challenges while preparing for S/4HANA and other transformation initiatives.

The second half went deeper into the technology, with a hands-on focus on solution architecture, implementation approaches, and practical guidance for partner Field Delivery/Forward Deployed Engineers (FDEs) who will bring these solutions to customers.

It was encouraging to see strong participation from both business and technical teams. Successful customer engagements depend on a shared understanding of the business challenges and the technical know-how to deliver practical solutions.

A clean S/4HANA core can still sit inside a very complicated enterprise landscape.

Organizations may reduce customizations in the ERP while leaving years of surrounding complexity untouched: aging content repositories, redundant interfaces, duplicate historical data, inconsistent retention rules, and legacy applications maintained solely for occasional access.

The core may be cleaner, but the operating model around it is not.

A complete clean-core strategy should therefore examine more than code and extensions. It should also ask:

• Which historical data still requires operational access?
• How many repositories store related business documents?
• Which interfaces exist only to support legacy applications?
• Are retention rules consistent across systems and jurisdictions?
• Can users retrieve historical information without reopening an older environment?

These decisions affect more than architecture. They influence cloud consumption, upgrade complexity, audit response, support requirements, and the long-term cost of the SAP landscape.

The goal is not to move every old dependency closer to S/4HANA. It is to determine which dependencies still serve a business purpose, and create a governed alternative for those that do not belong in the future-state environment.

A successful data extraction is only one part of retiring a legacy SAP system.

The bigger question is whether historical information will still be usable once the original application is gone.

That does not mean every future requirement has to be identified upfront. A good historical-access architecture should already preserve the core things users are likely to need: business context, relationships, documents, metadata, permissions, search, and governed access.

Before shutdown, it is still worth validating that model with a few real-world scenarios:

✓ Find a seven-year-old customer invoice
✓ Retrieve a historical employee document
✓ Open a closed maintenance order and its attachment
✓ Locate a transaction requested during an audit
✓ Apply the appropriate controls to a record under legal hold

The goal is not to design each of these use cases individually. It is to confirm that the underlying archive can support them consistently without depending on the legacy SAP system.

Myth: SAP data archiving is simply moving older information to cheaper storage.

Moving data is easy. Preserving what makes that data meaningful is the harder part.

When historical SAP data is pushed to low-cost storage without its business context, relationships, retention controls, and a reliable way to access it, you may save on storage while creating a much bigger problem later.

The data may still exist, but can you tell what business transaction it belonged to? Can you find the related documents? Can you apply retention and legal-hold rules? Can an auditor or business user retrieve and understand it years later? And can downstream analytics, BI, or AI applications securely access the historical information they need without having to load entire archives into those systems?

This becomes especially important during S/4HANA migrations and legacy-system decommissioning, where the goal is often to reduce the cost and complexity of keeping old systems alive.

The right question is not simply, “Where can we store this more cheaply?”

It is, “How do we preserve the information so it remains understandable, governed, accessible, and reusable without the original system?”

Applying one retention period to every SAP record may appear efficient, but it can create risk in both directions.

Keeping a legacy SAP system in read-only mode can appear to be the easiest option.
