Java & Flash updates: both are important to keep your system running well. Many times in the update process, there is screen with a toolbar to be added by default unless the option is deselected. Sometimes these options will change your homepage. Unless a toolbar is used daily, try to keep them off the browser as they can be a target for malware, reduce your screen visibility and can slow down your browsing.

I can't stress enough the importance of maintaining Windows updates. I can keep my computers virus-free longer with a fully updated computer and NO virus/malware protection than I can with virus protection and an out-of-date Windows operating system.

The anti-virus industry goes through changes approx. every 3-6 months. Currently, the best FREE tools are: Microsoft Security Essentials (real-time virus scanner), Malware Bytes (malware scanner and remover, real-time protection offered with purchase), and CCleaner (best hard drive cleaner).

The current fad with registry cleaners is that 98% of the time they do more harm than good. Other than CCleaner, do not use.

Tech Tip: Closing pop-ups notifying you that your computer is infected by clicking the "X" in the upper-right corner of the window can sometimes lead to malware installation. Instead use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to close the web browser. Re-open the browser to continue Internet use. This is not always successful, but it increases your chances of not installing the malware.
