Answers:
What is it? It's a Peckin' Chicken. A marvel of modern technology, the chicken pecks corn out of a tiny terracotta colored bowl. The whole affair is clothespin powered!

Why is it? You just never know what's going to come out of the lab here at Found & Altered. This little chicken was inspired by actually feeding the chickens with Grandpa when I was a wee guppy. They were so fun to watch, I thought it might be a hoot to make a minature version of the live chicken feeding event.

Where is it? It will be hidden somewhere at Richland Library Main on August 29, 2026 to be found by one lucky scavenger hunter during the most awesome Minature Market Columbia has ever known: Small Mart.



Here's the Overview: Small Mart is a special miniature art market hosted at Richland Library Main in downtown Columbia, SC. This year Small Mart is on Saturday August 29, 2026 from 11am until 3pm.

It features local artists and makers selling handcrafted goods and tiny artworks where nothing exceeds 4 inches in size.

Event Highlights:

Miniature Market: Local creators sell tiny handcrafted goods, miniature sculptures, leatherbound books, and tiny creations.

Tiny Art Activities:
Free hands-on activities centered around small-scale crafts and good vibes.

Accompanying Exhibit: Held in conjunction with Pocket Places, a tiny art gallery exhibition.

Location: Richland Library Main (1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC).

The hand-forged crank will work well with the Rock Amp.

I have assembled all the needed parts:
1. The box which will contain the crank-driven mechanism, made from old fence wood.
2. The speaker (seen here without the paper "skin" applied). Note: the ball will help hold the sticks in place as I apply the paper.
3. The pin gears which wil allow the crank to turn the rock.
4. The spring-loaded skewer which will allegedly maintain pressure against the rock.
5. The turntable for the rock to sit on.
6. The box back which includes the top part that holds the spring-loaded skewer and the speaker
7. And, of course, the axles that will drive the gears (still have to come up with the crank).

The hypothesis is this:

Can I make a hand cranked turntable that you can lay a rock on, spin the rock, and hear the sound that the rock's vibrations make?

I would use the ole Stick and Paper method that I use to build lamps to make a gramophone-type speaker.

I wondered if I could make a Rock Amp. The initial sketch was just awful! But I have learned that the initial sketch does NOT need to be a work of art.
