Hello all, I received this message from facebook about my business page: 'Your page is scheduled for permanent deletion due to a post that has infringed upon our trademark rights. We have reached this decision after a thorough review and in accordance with our intellectual property protection policies.'

I have no idea what they are referencing, as I only post my own images, and unfortunately my ability to contact them about it has been turned off. So, in light of probably having the page shut down, I wanted to contact all of you to encourage you to friend me on my personal page. I initially tried to keep my personal and my business page separate, and encourage people to like my business page, but most people following my photography seem to have friended me there instead. As a result of that, most of my photography posts are on my personal page.

So...long story short, I encourage all of you who enjoy my posts and who are not friends with me on my personal page to friend me there. I will send you invites as well, so if you see the invite, that's why!

Crows and ravens are birds that we often think of as black, but many birds with black/dark plumage have an irridescence to their plumage, which can take on all kinds of colors in different lighting conditions. Blues and purples are hues I often see, but other colors often pop up too.

In the parks, the ravens are quite 'friendly', often approaching you in hopes of being fed. Unfortunately, many people do feed the ravens and other animals in the parks, which can eventually lead to a bad outcome for the critter. Since I didn't feed him, I think this guy felt I was a bit of a stick in the mud, but it was clear this guy had other prospects it was actively scoping out.

Ravens are very intelligent birds, and like crows, can hold grudges for years, and remember the voices and faces of people who have mistreated them.

The sun sinks below the mountain, the last of the warm evening light gilding the grasses and leaves in autumn color. No matter the time of year, Grand Teton National Park is spectacular. We've been to the park several times in October before, but each time the peak of fall color is slightly different. It keeps us on our toes, and shows us a new side to her every time we come.

As I look out over this scene of Willow Flats and the dramatic Tetons in the distance, I can't help but think of the legendary paws that will no longer be traversing this landscape as they have the last 29 years. 399's light has gone out in its physical form, but her Spirit remains.

Along the shores of Yellowstone Lake, a few trumpeter swans were close to the shore. I sat quietly along the shore and was surprised that this one and its companion weren't at all phased by my presence. I suppose if I was flapping my arms about and making a lot of noise, it would have been a very different story! I've learned to try and be as inobtrusive as possible, and on this beautiful fall day, I watched them for a few minutes, catching this one briefly flapping its wings.

Trumpeter swans are very large birds that are just gorgeous. Yellowstone is very cold in the winter, so my guess is that these swans were just passing through on their migratory path, and stopped for rest and food. Many migrate to central US for the winter. They may not migrate all that far, but need open water for their winter territory. I sometimes see trumpeters swans in winter locally on sand bars at Lake Roosevelt, where there are shallow feeding areas.

It is early morning in the Tetons, in the blue hour just before dawn. The sun will soon rise above the mountains in the distance. The mist rises off the Snake River as elk bugle loudly on the other side of the river, piercing the early morning silence. Three elk cautiously step out from the trees onto the riverbed, and into the water and mist. Keenly aware of their surroundings, they each stop briefly to assess us, then crossed the river quickly, climbing the bank on the other side, and disappearing out of sight.

I am not an 'early bird', but experiences like this are breathtaking, wondrous and fleeting. Worth every bit of lost sleep. I'm so grateful to share these moments with Jim, as they are truly magical.

Here are two crops of the same image. I'm curious--which one is your favorite?

A very moody scene of mountains brushed in gold from the western larch, combined with smoke from fires, and a touch of sunlight peeking through the smoke.

When the wind kicked up, the golden needles came down like rain, coalescing into pathways of gold on the lake due to the slight current at the water's surface.

It is with a very heavy heart that I share that Grizzly 399 was struck and killed by a car last night. Her yearling cub was with her at the time, and doesn't appear to have been hit, but they are unable to find him. Since she was such a good mom and the cub was very large, officials hope that he will be ok on his own (because he is so large, most speculate it is a male).

I am sure this is no doubt one of hundreds if not thousands of posts that will be posted in tribute to 399, but since I heard of her death, I've been unable to think of little else. Jim and I have followed her story for several years, and have been privileged to see her on several occasions. I'm heartbroken, and my phone and facebook feed has been flooded with people reaching out to me, having read my posts about her-thank you all for your concern, it is much appreciated.

But I am not the only one grieving the loss of this most remarkable bear. National and international news feed have been flooded with news of her death. There is a gaping hole that she leaves behind. So tonight, I am looking over my images and memories of this most remarkable bear who I was most privileged to see and learn from, and compiled some images in tribute.

399 gave us wonder, awe, joy, hope and inspiration. She showed us patience, tolerance, perseverence, intelligence and grace. She became an ambassador for all the grizzlies that came behind her, and completely changed the conversation about grizzly conservation and our ability as humans to co-exist with them. 399 gave us more grace than we deserved.

But none of that was her goal. Instead, her life was devoted to being the best mother she could be to her 18 cubs, and she did so as the world watched and learned. In the process, she has left a legacy for us all, and all the grizzlies that follow her.

She deserved to quietly die a natural death at a ripe old age in her den. And her cub Spirit deserved to have his mom with him until he was ready to be on his own. We've learned many hard lessons at the expense of 399 and her cubs.

Rest in peace 399-yours was a life well lived that made a difference. Your Spirit will always remain in the Tetons. And we keep your memory alive by remembering the joy you gave us and the lessons you taught us.

Though I've been looking for a pine marten for several years, they have eluded me, so I was very excited to finally see one in the Tetons last week. They are in the mustelid family, but they are larger than other mustelids like weasels and stoats.

Voles make up much of their diet, but they also hunt prey much larger than they are, as well as smaller prey like birds. They also eat fruit, seeds and nut, and are considered to be important seed distributors. An interesting tidbit....an Alaskan study showed that blueberry seeds germinated at higher rates if they had first gone through the system of martens and passed through in the s**t.

They can get up to 2 feet in length, and have large feet that help them travel easily over deep snow. They do have trouble staying warm in the winter, so they burrow under the snow and stay warm amongst tree roots.

Except for mating season, they are solitary creatures. Like bears, pine marten (and other mustelids) reproduction involves delayed implantation. They breed, and a full 6-7 months later, eggs implant if the marten's health status will support a pregnancy. Young are born 9 months after mating, but just two months of that time is after implantation when the kits are developing.

They were heavily trapped in the 1800s, and they have had a slow recovery. They are still actively trapped in states like Alaska.

Like weasels, these guys are inquisitive and full of personality, making them a fun subject to photograph. Seeing and photographing this pine marten was a highlight of our trip!

Over the years, I've made several posts about Grizzly 399, who is perhaps the world's most famous grizzly. The grizzly pictured here is 399's most well known offspring, an 18 year old sow known as 'Grizzly 610'. 610 has had several litters of her own, and 399 and 610 seem to regularly interact with one another. One year, 610 came out of the den with two cubs, and 399 came out with three of her own. During an interaction, one of 399's three cubs ended up with 610, and 610 raised the cub. To all observers and researchers, this wasn't a hostile takeover or kidnapping, but perhaps the younger 610 helping out 399, who was advancing in age. While no one will ever know the reason for sure, it's an unusual thing to observe in the bear world.

Last October, just before our fall 2023 visit to the Tetons, 610 was struck in a hit and run accident, and she was found on the edge of the road. The very long skid marks indicated it was a large vehicle, likely a semi, that had been traveling at a high rate of speed in a park that has a lower speed limit, due to the abundant wildlife. 610 had three yearling cubs at the time-they hung back from the road, obviously concerned about their mom. Word of the accident spread quickly, and people flocked to the scene for a very emotional few hours, as 610 lay almost motionless at the scene. Most thought 610 would not survive this major injury. The death of 610 would also likely mean her cubs would not survive. There were four lives on the line. But, after several hours, 610 surprised everyone by getting up and walking away with her cubs. There was concern that she had internal injuries that she would succumb to, and she was observed closely in the coming days. Each day it became more likely that she would survive what was surely a major vehicle strike, and fortunately she appears to have recovered with no residual effects.

This spring, her three cubs were old enough to be sent out on their own, and 610 spent the summer on her own, and most likely will emerge from the den with new cubs in spring 2025.

On this particular night, we saw her grazing in a sage meadow near the road, disappearing into a copse of trees at the edge of the meadow. We have learned to pay attention to the speed and direction a bear is heading, to anticipate where they might pop up next, and in this case, we knew there was another road on the other side of the copse of trees. So, we went to that road, pulled into and parked in a pullout, and waited. Some times that strategy pays off, and other times you sit for hours only to find that the bear changed directions. But this time it paid off. After a short wait, she emerged from the trees right in front of us, and began walking directly toward us. By then, other cars had parked on the same road, and we all watched from our cars as she moved our direction. Unlike grizzlies outside of the parks, the bears within the parks are used to crowds, and 610 non chalantly and non aggressively meandered between cars to the sage meadow across the road. This behavior in close proximity to humans leads many tourists to think of the bears as tame, cuddly, and safe; but you need to be very careful, as they are still wild animals with the potential to become aggressive, especially in certain situations.

610 looks well fed and healthy, a good sign that she will have cubs next spring. Grizzlies are a species with 'delayed implantation': when the grizzly sow mates in May through July, and an egg is fertilized, the fertilized egg develops into a tiny ball of cells which then stops growing further for another 4-5 months. If the mother's nutritional and health status are good and she has gained sufficient weight for hibernation, the eggs will implant just before hibernation. The healthier and more well fed the bear, the more likely there will be multiple cubs come spring. Delayed implantation occurs with other species too, such as mustelids/weasels. Delayed implantation is a truly fascinating thing in the natural world!

I love how the evening autumn sunlight highlighted her beautiful coat as she looks right at me. She's a gorgeous and massive bear, and an important part of 399's legacy.
