Salesforce and Microsoft Product Managers: How Much Do They Earn?

Product managers at Microsoft and Salesforce have a particularly daunting job: Not only must they handle all the critical responsibilities of the role, including keeping production on-track, but they must do so at enormous scale. Any hiccup can have a catastrophic ripple effect, including massive cost overruns and upset corporate clients.

Microsoft and Salesforce have sufficient capital to pay out enormous salaries to product managers who’ve demonstrated they have what it takes to carry out their jobs at huge scale. Here’s the progression of compensation for product managers at Salesforce as they climb through the ranks. (see the pictures below)

If you’re interviewing for a product manager job at Microsoft or Salesforce (or pretty much any other company), success won’t just come down to your technical knowledge, or even your track record of overseeing the launch and maintenance of apps and services; it’s clear that hiring managers and recruiters also care about “soft skills” such as communication and empathy.

It’s also important to have technical knowledge that aligns with the job at hand. Both Salesforce and Microsoft, for example, produce massive cloud-based products; if you’re applying for a product manager role, extensive knowledge of the cloud (particularly Azure, in Microsoft’s case) is absolute must. You’ll need to demonstrate that you can launch a quality product on time.

Which technology jobs are in highest demand as we head into spring? That’s a vital question for anyone who’s looking for a new role at the moment. The good news is, no matter what your skills, there are jobs in a variety of areas, from software engineering to product management.

For data on employer demand, we turn to Burning Glass, which collects and analyses millions of job postings from across the country. We filtered technology job post data by the past 90 days, for insight into which positions are seeing sustained demand. (See the results in the 2nd picture)

While there are many tech roles in high demand, it’s clear that software developer/engineer is very much in the lead by a large margin. What Do Product Designers Earn at Google and Facebook?

In light of the importance of design at those firms, how much as product designers actually paid? For an answer, we turn to levels.fyi, which crowdsources compensation information from the technologists who work at some of the world’s biggest companies.

According to Burning Glass, which collects and analyzes job postings from across the country, the median salary for a product designer is $90,000 per year, and highly dependent on experience. Those new to product design (i.e., with zero to two years of experience) have a median annual salary of $71,000, while those with more than nine years of experience earn $108,000. As you can see from the Google and Facebook numbers, landing a job at a huge tech company can translate into quite a bit more, pay-wise.

If you’re interested in product design as a career path, keep in mind that you’ll have to master a diverse set of skills, including designing and prototyping, testing, design iteration, and problem-solving. As with other design-related jobs, empathy and soft skills are also key.

Bill Gates is the co-founder of the software company Microsoft, the developer of Windows, an operating system for personal computers that are most used in the world. Not everything in his life has been a success. He did not have a good start in the business world. He suffered to achieve recognition because his first business was a resounding failure.

In 1970, when he was studying in high school, he and his partner Paul Allen created Traf-O-Data, which was a computer program to automatically read raw data and that allowed to generate useful reports for engineers but nobody hired their services. After this failed business, both entrepreneurs learned to develop a software for computers that they didn’t have access to, and in 1975 they created a new company called Microsoft. What came next was a huge success that has placed him today as one of the richest men in the world.

Failure is just a part of success, and every failure is an opportunity to learn and correct.

Google CEO Has Some Good Meeting Advice for You

It’s comforting to know that even the CEO of a tech giant is still learning a few things about how to run meetings. That’s exactly what Google chief executive Sundar Pichai recently confessed to Inc. magazine, as part of a wide-ranging interview about the emotional sides of his job.

The pandemic has exacerbated some issues around meetings, particularly when it comes to getting everyone on a particular team to participate. “I’ve had to rethink a lot in the context of virtual meetings,” Pichai told the magazine. “Virtual meetings are harder, because everyone’s looking at the person leading the meeting. And while some naturally participate, others hold back. I try to bring those people in, to make sure everyone participates.”

“This helps everyone not only to feel heard, but also to feel that they have a stake in the outcome,” he added.

Whether virtual or in-person, ensuring that everyone’s heard can also help boost team morale and prevent burnout. While overwork is often cited as a key cause of burnout, technologists have also reported that a lack of recognition for their work, friction with their boss, monotony, and issues with the broader team can all lead to feeling totally fried. Being included in the team’s conversation—and feeling like their concerns are heard—can hopefully mitigate at least some of those factors, but it’s up to managers and team leaders to ensure that happens.
