analytics: what you can’t see you can’t control
Where should we begin?

Once upon a time, not so long ago, networking teams got by with basic analytics using SNMP events, syslogs, custom scripts, utilization reports, and simple monitoring tools. How things have changed!!
Where are we headed?

60% of transactions either originate or terminate outside of the private enterprise network.1 The Internet has become the new network core.

40% of enterprise workloads will be on public cloud by 2023.2 Applications and services are disaggregated and distributed across a myriad of private and public cloud and edge environments.
58% of employees will continue to work 8 or more days/month from home and more devices are connecting to your network than ever, multiplying your team’s workload.3

And if that wasn’t enough your network has become the vital lifeblood of an increasingly digital organization. Is your budget and time to value keeping up?

Enter AIOps.
The future demands the advanced use of data and artificial intelligence to help accelerate and automate operations in this increasingly complex world. According to IDC, “by 2024, 50% of large enterprises will adopt AIOps solutions for automating major IT system and service management processes.”

Four Factors Driving 100 Gbps Upgrades

According to data from Crehan Research, 100 and 25 Gbps Ethernet speeds increased by 40% year-over-year and accounted for 24% of total high-speed NIC revenue in 2020. There is a clear march to higher data rates, with 100 Gbps being the primary target. Below are my thoughts about what is driving enterprises to upgrade their connectivity to 100 Gbps.

1) Compute-intensive workloads are growing: High-performance computing and interactive applications that are sensitive to throughput, latency, and jitter.

2) Increasing network loading: Broad adoption of mobile and a myriad of online services over the past several years has fueled the number and durations of connections, as well as the amount of data transferred over them.

3) AI : AI has reached a point where it’s being integrated into every major type of enterprise operational technology, including marketing, HR, sales, eCommerce, manufacturing, customer retention, IT operations, etc.

4) Maturity and decreasing cost: As these other three factors have increased demand, network .

Next-gen wireless options: Wi-Fi 6, 5G or private 5G?

As Wi-Fi and 5G technology improve to support higher bandwidth and more users per access point, enterprises need to look deeper to decide which best meets their needs.

Recent advancements in Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) have made using 5G a reality, which would enable companies to bring 5G services into buildings.

Wi-Fi 6E: Don’t let hype push you off your refresh cycle

The promise of Wi-Fi in the 6GHz band is undeniable, but experts agree that it’s rarely worth deviating from your usual refresh cycle.

Despite the inarguable advantages of operating Wi-Fi in the 6GHz frequency range, analysts say that the smart time to buy Wi-Fi 6E is whenever an organization would ordinarily make an upgrade – and not before.

Network certs 2021: Significant raises for the right ones

As employees split their time between the office and working at home, IT skills requirements have shifted to cloud, security, and automation.

COVID-19 kicked off one of the most disruptive economic periods since World War II, and companies scrambled to shift business processes to the cloud to meet escalating digital demands. In fact, companies digitized many activities at a rate 20% to 25% faster than previously thought possible, according to research from McKinsey & Company.

That acceleration has impacted the IT workforce: 85% of IT hiring managers say their hiring needs have changed, according to a survey by colocation provider INAP. This creates an opportunity for IT professionals who want to move ahead in their careers. Getting trained in key technologies can be a stepping stone not only to better pay but also to leadership jobs with more responsibilities.
IT professionals who gained new skills or certifications last year received an average raise in excess of $12,000—more than double the average IT annual salary increase of $5,000, according to the most recent Global Knowledge IT Skills and Salary Report, released this past December.

Beyond the pay gains and possibility of promotion, getting advanced training may now be a necessity, particularly for networking pros. In addition to mastering the fundamentals, “network engineers will need to continue to evolve their skills to be relevant,” particularly in cloud, security, software-defined networking (SDN) and virtualization, says Zane Schweer, lead author of the Global Knowledge 2020 IT Salary and Skills Report.

How to use iPerf3 to test bandwidth

Admins must measure the throughput of their WAN links to ensure they are working properly. One way to do that is by using iPerf, the open source benchmarking utility. The latest version, iPerf3, is a complete rewrite of the code first developed by the National Laboratory for Applied Network Research in the 2000s.
How to use iPerf3?

IPerf3 is well suited to test data mover applications, such as those that run remote backups or synchronize databases. It can also be used to test the bandwidth of cloud-based systems. With services like AWS, Azure and Cloud, bandwidth provisioning for a given class of VMs is often unclear. IPerf3 provides a quick and easy way to determine the effective bandwidth between the two systems, although with an important caveat: Don't assume the bandwidth is symmetrical -- continue to test in both directions.

Important considerations to use iPerf3

Conduct iPerf3 test runs outside of normal business hours for anything more than just a quick assessment. While ping generates only a minimal network load, the opposite is true of iPerf3. As it measures the capacity of your WAN link, iPerf3 attempts to consume all the bandwidth the WAN will deliver. This provides you with great bandwidth measurements, but it leaves you with unhappy users.
